Page 42 of Saving Soul
“I’m sure he’s fine. Tristan and Finn talk every few days, and he hasn’t picked up on anything.”
My heart filled with warmth. “I love how close they still are.”
“Tragedy will either bring you closer or tear you apart. There’s no getting rid of us now.”
Moisture gathered in the corners of my eyes. “I miss you guys.”
“We miss you, too.”
After another hour of catching up on all things Tash, I sat on my bed, shuffling through the books I’d already read on my nightstand. I thought about visiting the library to pick another, but my heart was still stuck in the pages of the book Adam stole. I’d have to find another way to pass the time.
Not wanting to monopolize Liam’s driver while his family was around, I ruled out the beach and headed to the pool instead. According to Max, Caroline and William never used the facilities at Harlow Manor, so I was free to enjoy myself.
As I stepped outside, a crisp wind whipped around my face, and I scurried back, opting for the indoor pool instead. Even the promise of warm water couldn’t get me out there. Winter in the Hamptons was clearly on its way, and I didn’t like it.
The impressive fifteen-meter indoor lap pool was wide enough for two people to swim side by side, and it was any promising young swimmer’s dream. The pool spanned across the entire room, with a spa and sauna on one end and a change room at the other. The peaked ceilings complemented the Tudor style, but all the fixtures were modern and impeccably maintained, like the pool was used every day.
The tiles were cool under my feet as I slipped off my flip flops, but it was a welcome contrast to the humidity in the room. I dropped my robe onto the bench and revealed the only swimsuit I owned. As I tightened the straps of my bikini, I stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows, admiring the vast gardens. Harlow Manor was a beautiful place, full of wasted luxuries that people like me could only dream of.
A throat cleared behind me, startling me out of my envious daze.
“I’m sorry, I—” my voice faltered. Adam stood before me in nothing but a towel with sweat glistening all over his sculptured body. “I thought I was alone.”
“You were.” He moved closer. “I was in the sauna.”
“It must’ve been hot,” I murmured, hypnotized by the beads of sweat sliding down his chest.
“It was.” His eyes rolled to my breasts and grinned. “The way I like it.”
His clear innuendo snapped me out of my trance. “I thought you were spending time with your family.”
“I was…” Adam picked up another towel from the stack and wiped it over his face. “But then I remembered my father is a jerk, and my mother is a…” He snickered. “What did you call her the night we met?”
I groaned. “I’d rather not say.”
“Oh, that’s right. I remember. A complete bitc—”
“Well, I’m sure your grandfather appreciates you being here,” I cut in, not wanting to rehash the mortifying conversation.
The light in Adam’s eyes grew brighter. “Gramps always does.”
I dipped my toes into the pool. “He talks about you and Grayson all the time.”
“Oh yeah, what does he say?”
“Oh, that’s confidential.” The corner of my mouth twitched. “Death doula/client privilege.”
Adam’s deep chuckle ricocheted off the tiles. “That’s not a thing.”
I placed my hands on my hips. “It’s totally a thing.”
“Well, youaregood at keeping secrets.”
I froze. “Why would you say that?” Did he know about my son?
“Like our night together?”
Relief flooded my body. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
