Page 34 of Saving Soul
“The spiciest pizza in existence,” he said, adding a few slices to his plate. “Plusanchovies.”
“Spiciest, eh?” I scoffed. “I’ll give it a go.”
“Uh-uh. No way.” Adam pulled the box onto his lap while creating a protective shell around it with his arms.
Josie sighed. “Adam’s not a sharer. Clearly.”
“Come on, bro.” Grayson nodded in my direction. “Give the girl a slice.”
Adam’s eyes tapered to mine before grumbling. “Fine, but you’re going to have to get a little closer if you want some,” he said, tapping the empty space beside him.
With an inaudible groan, I stood and carefully maneuvered myself onto the couch. His freshly washed scent doused my sinuses, enticing me to lean closer. The pizza was no match for Adam.
“Are you sure you can handle it?” he asked, adding a slice to my plate. He was either underestimating my tolerance for chilis or something else entirely.
I chose the former. “Are you kidding?”
Adam’s eyes dilated as I brought the slice to my mouth and took my first bite. He watched my lips as I chewed, waiting. As the heat filled my mouth, I ran my tongue over my bottom lip, spreading the sensation. “Mmm…it’s good.” My gaze met his with a shrug. “But I’ve had hotter.”
Adam fell back into the couch cushions and ran his hand over his jawline, speechless.
“Wow, Adam.” Grayson hooted. “You’ve finally met your match.”
“So it seems.” Adam opened the box so I could take another slice.
As I reached in, our eyes collided.
“I’ll have to make it hotter next time,” he added with a sly wink.
As the heat in my mouth migrated below, I swallowed, wishing I’d chewed more. Thankfully, Josie and Grayson were too preoccupied with their dinner to notice the sexual energy pulsating between us.
“God, I’m starving,” Josie mumbled through her full mouth.
Grayson’s eyes widened. “Didn’t you just eat an entire bag ofCheetos?”
Her narrowed gaze rotated to her husband. “And?”
“And…nothing.” Grayson held up his hands.
“Breastfeeding can take a lot out of you,” I said, watching Josie rummage through the boxes for her next slice.
“See!” Josie nudged her husband’s side. “It’s what I’ve been telling you. Harrison is sucking the life out of me.”
As if hearing his name, Harrison stirred awake, causing an enduring groan from his parents.
“How does he always know when we’re eating?” Grayson grumbled.
Josie threw her food back onto her plate. “Reheated pizza, it is.”
“Just leave him to grizzle for a little while. He may fall back to sleep.”
“Easy for you to say, Gray. Every time that kid makes a noise, my boobs think there’s a fire to put out.”
“Oh my God.” Adam squeezed his eyes shut. “Remind me to never have children.”
Grayson snorted. “As if you’re ever going to.”
When Harrison’s crying picked up a notch, I stood and approached the bassinet. “May I?” I asked, careful not to interfere. I remembered how sensitive I was as a new mom.
