Hannah

Looking at the wolves chosen for this operation in the training facility, I take a deep breath and close my eyes.

Aileen is pacing beside me, waiting for her coven to arrive while the rest of our forty-man army goes over strategy and entry points with Sabrina, who, thankfully, finally got her hands on a map of the hunters’ headquarters.

“Miella should have been here by now with the others,” Aileen mutters, worry in her voice. “Something must have happened,” she states, stopping dead in her tracks.

Sensing the anxiety seeping off her, I reach out and take her hand, feeling Aileen jump. As much as she portrays herself as a fun-loving, ditzy blonde, I know Aileen sees her coven as her family. Each vampire was sired either by her or by the first four vampires she turned.

“Miella is smart. They will be here soon,” I reassure my friend, opening my eyes to stare at her.

She takes a deep breath, her red eyes slowly returning to normal. After a few more deep breaths, she lets go of my hand and gives me a grateful smile.

“Thank you, Hannah,” she says, turning back to look at the small beaten path leading away from the training facility and toward the pack house.

“No problem, Aileen. I will always be here to help keep you grounded,” I reply.

Silence settles between us, and I return to watching the wolves train. Sabrina seems surprisingly calm around all these wolves who practically tower over her, and I can’t help but shake my head in amazement. As scared as she was when we first captured her, Sabrina has come out of her shell.

A few feet away from her, Nelson watches as he leans against a tree, not wanting to get in the way of his mate as she helps plan to take down the organization of her dead husband.

“I had Abbigail draft up new identity papers for her,” Aileen states, looking at Sabrina.

“Has she figured out that you compelled her in her sleep to see if she was truly on our side?” I ask the vampire, eliciting a chuckle.

“No,” Aileen answers, standing beside me and hiding her anxiety at Miella being late.

“She and Nelson have no clue I have compelled them to spill the truth. Thankfully, everything they have told us has been one hundred percent truthful. It’s why I had new identities made for them.”

“I’m sure they will appreciate that once this operation is over,” I muse.

Aileen hums in agreement, and I catch her leg beginning to bounce.

Miella just pulled in with the tractor-trailer, Jiya’s voice rings in through our link, and I grin, happy to have some news on the vampire.

Relaying this information to Aileen, I watch her sigh with relief, slumping a little.

Seconds later, a small gust of wind brushes past us, kicking up a little bit of dust. The royal pack wolves quickly ready themselves for a fight, but my wolves wait with amused expressions for the dust to clear.

“Hannah banana!” a cheerful voice calls out before I am engulfed in a hug.

“Hi, Miella!” I greet the vampire with bright pink hair, hugging her back.

“Where is Claira Bear?” Aileen’s second-in-command asks, looking around while still locked in my embrace.

“Here, Miella!” Claira calls from the crowd, an amused expression on her face.

The royal pack wolves look at us in confusion, especially Julian, who seems ready to rip Miella’s arms off me. I know he has a hard time with vampires given their bloodthirsty reputation against enemy packs, but he has been surprisingly okay with Dr. Grace and Aileen being part of my life.

“Hi, Claira Bear!” Miella calls, releasing me only to zip over to Claira and wrap her in one of her hugs.

“Is she always like this?”

Jumping at Fabian’s voice, I whirl around to find my friend watching Miella with wide eyes, his nostrils flaring. Odd.

“She is,” I answer, staring at Fabian with skepticism.

Suddenly, I am pulled out of the way as a blur speeds past me, tackling Fabian without warning. The royal wolves move, ready to attack Miella, who is now sniffing along Fabian’s neck, but Fabian lets out a loud roar, keeping them at bay.

“Goddess, this is unexpected,” Aileen says, running a hand through her hair.

“Is it safe to assume what I think is happening?” I ask, equally stunned by the sight before me.

“Yep,” she says, patting me on the back. “Looks like my second is the mate of the beta of the royal pack,” Aileen continues, her words filled with amusement.

“You know what? After learning that humans can be mated to werewolves, this doesn’t surprise me at all,” I say, raising my hands in surrender and turning on my heels.

Walking toward the crowd of confused vampires, I begin to explain which unit they will be assigned to for this operation.

After five years of being friends with Aileen, I have gained the respect of her coven members and watch as they silently listen to my words, ignoring the squeals of delight coming from one of their leaders as she curls around Fabian.

“Miella, get off Fabian so we can get to work. You can fuck him senseless after we take down the hunters,” Aileen calls over her shoulder, earning stifled chuckles from the Haven Trail wolves and the vampires in her coven.

Miella hisses at her for a moment but complies without fuss, zipping away from Fabian to stand beside her coven leader with a childish pout on her lips.

“I have waited three hundred years to find my mate. Couldn’t you be a party pooper another time?

” she asks Aileen with a childish pout, making me roll my eyes.

No one would have guessed this outgoing, pink-haired vampire was the strict, no-nonsense teacher who taught at the University of Ottawa during the fall.

“Like you said, you have waited three hundred years to find him. You can wait another twenty-four hours,” Aileen chides.

My lips twitch in amusement, and it takes everything in me not to laugh at Aileen and Miella, the first vampire Aileen ever turned.

“Anyway,” Julian calls out, cutting through the crowd to stand beside me. “We are all gathered here with the goal of taking down the hunters here in Ottawa,” he continues, looking around at everyone gathered in the clearing outside the training facility.

“Just about a week ago, hunters crossed into Haven Trail’s borders after flipping the trailer carrying multiple rogues that they were planning to sell.

During that time, we managed to not only kill two of the five hunters that day, but we were also able to capture another two,” I continue, frowning.

“The fifth member was arrested but later killed because Daven, a vampire from Aileen’s coven, placed him in a cage with a rogue vampire who was arrested on the same day. ”

The royal pack wolves look at members of Aileen’s coven with distrust, some appearing ready to attack at any moment.

Julian lets out a warning growl, his eyes glazing over as he links them.

Instantly, the royal pack wolves look away in guilt, and I take Julian’s hand in mine, squeezing it in thanks.

“Look, Daven’s actions do not represent Aileen and her coven.

He acted out of resentment, seeking retribution for the vampires held captive in the Hunters Association,” I state, allowing a no-nonsense tone to enter my voice.

“We are here to work as a team, but if the wolves from the royal pack can’t behave, they will be left out. ”

Shocked eyes dart between Julian and me. Thankfully, Julian does not argue against my threat; instead, he wholeheartedly agrees, telling his wolves to behave or miss out on the opportunity.

“Now, we got lucky when capturing the hunters, as the female turned out to be mated to one of the rogues they transported. After agreeing to let them join Haven Trail, Sabrina began to help us plan this attack. Sabrina, please raise your hand,” I continue my explanation, watching the small human raise her hand and sheepishly glance at the vampires.

“Sabrina will explain the patrol routes to the vampires who have just arrived, and we will run a few drills before preparing to head out. The plan is to sneak into their base by midnight and take down all the hunters by two in the morning.”

Aileen takes over at this point, giving additional instructions to her coven. Her members nod, their eyes glowing red with excitement. Julian stiffens beside me and averts his gaze as he breathes in my scent. He must be feeling unnerved right now by the way their eyes glowed in unison.

“Now, we only have eight hours to prepare for this operation,” I continue. “We expect you all to get along so that we can not only rid the supernatural world of a band of hunters but also save the vampires and werewolves they have abducted and abused.”

This time, Julian cuts in, expressing his expectations to those gathered around. With our debriefing done, we quickly break into our units, readying ourselves for tonight’s operation.

By the end of the night, the hunters will be down about two hundred men, and vampires and werewolves will be able to breathe easy for a while.
