Reaching the pack house dressed in a blouse, dress pants, and heels, the first thing I notice is Saben running around with pups his age.
He is laughing and smiling as the five pups chase after a ball.
Thankfully, I can bring him home today without worrying that he will find out about Julian and me spending the last few days together.
True to Julian’s word, he helped me clean my house after our shower, much to my surprise. I did not know he knew how to clean, but my bedroom was back to normal, minus four fluffy pillows that I now need to replace, and the scent of sex was subdued by the scent of clean linens and air freshener.
I know one day I will need to introduce Julian to Saben as his father, but I am not ready for that conversation just yet. I want my pup to still have some sense of normalcy before he is thrust into the world of a royal wolf.
“Someone is on the mend,” I hear Aileen call out from my left, the vampire disappearing from her spot on the stairs only to stand in front of me with a smile on her lips and her fangs peeking through.
In her hand is a black Stanley cup, from which the light scent of blood mixed with strawberry juice wafts through the straw she sips from.
“I am still a little sore but ready to get back to work both with the pack and with Trail Corporation,” I state with a shrug.
“Claira told me the program passed all the tests with flying colors, and with my heat incapacitating me for the last few days, we had to push back the launch day. So I need to make sure the pack is in order before returning to the company to launch the program in three days,” I add.
Aileen rolls her eyes at this but doesn’t go further into detail. She knows that I am a workaholic, needing to ensure the company thrives so that the income can sustain Haven Trails for many years to come.
“Well, it’s nice to see you back on your feet and…” Aileen pauses, taking a deep breath as a twinkle of amusement lights up her eyes. “Smelling like that mate of yours,” she continues, wiggling her eyebrows at me.
Groaning at her innuendo, I playfully push her to the side, walking past my friend and toward my pup.
“So, where is King Julian now? His men have been walking around the pack, looking into how things are run, especially with you out of service. We expect him and the rest of the royal pack wolves to leave soon,” Aileen continues to pester me, giving me a playful smirk, one that I try my best to ignore.
“He is at the guest house getting briefed on what he missed while I was in heat and he went through his rut,” I answer, watching Saben sniff the air as a breeze rushes past me and toward him.
His little body stiffens as he turns, looking for me, before his eyes zero in on me walking toward him.
Forgetting about the game, Saben runs over to where Aileen and I are, his arms outstretched toward me.
I bend down, quickly wrapping my arms around my pup as soon as he is in reach and breathe in his mango custard scent before standing.
“Mama, are you feeling better?” he asks, his little voice full of concern as he hugs me tightly.
“I am,” I answer, pulling back to poke his little nose. “I am feeling so much better, and the first thing on my mind was to see you, Saben. I missed you so much,” I add, tickling his side with my free hand.
He giggles at my words, leaning forward to plant a kiss on my cheek before resting his little head on my shoulder. “I missed you too, Mama,” Saben says, clinging to me.
My heart breaks at the sadness in his voice, and I try my best not to cry in front of my pup.
“Staying with Granny Jiya was nice, but I miss home and sleeping in your bed with you when I have bad dreams,” he continues, his comment about bad dreams making me frown.
“Did you have bad dreams, baby?” I ask, carrying Saben toward the pack house and ignoring the bemused smirk on Aileen’s lips.
I know she has questions about how I spent my time with Julian, but I will be avoiding her like the plague for the time being while I focus on my son, my pack, and my company.
“I did,” my son sheepishly admits, his voice trembling slightly.
“I dreamt those bad people who kidnapped me came back… that this time you were taken and I would never see you again.”
My heart breaks at the whimper in his voice, and I move toward the small sitting room off the entrance of the pack house, taking a seat in the armchair with Saben snuggled against me.
“I can promise you that I am not going anywhere,” I say gently, slowly rubbing Saben’s back. “I am here to stay with you forever and ever,” I reassure my pup, hearing Saben sigh with relief.
“I know, Mama,” Saben says, giving me a bright smile.
Concerned about him, I make a note to take him to see Dr. Grace to talk about the trauma he has been through before asking Saben if he is hungry.
He shakes his head no, telling me he just wants to have a nap in my arms, and without hesitation, I tuck his little head against my shoulder and tell him to sleep, assuring him that I will still be holding him when he wakes.
