Julian

Watching Hannah walk away with Saben fast asleep in her arms, I take in the lingering scent of vanilla custard, itching to race after her and hold her in my arms.

Throughout dinner, I watch as Saben steals everyone’s attention while he talks to Fabian with such ease.

Hannah has stayed quiet, only cutting in when expanding on a topic about Saben’s interest in reading, and I am captivated by the mother-son duo.

A nagging feeling that Saben might be mine keeps growing, and the mate bond hums each time I picture Saben being my pup.

The signs were there with how he has my green eyes and looks almost identical to how I did as a pup, save for the white locks he got from his mother. When Hannah declared she was taking Saben to bed, I bolted after her, needing to know if Saben was mine.

He has no father because his father never wanted me, so why should he want his own son ? Those words echo in my mind, and I search the mate bond for answers. What I found made everything click into place.

The bond was snapped in half, something I never really noticed these last five years.

I was so focused on finding my mate, on blaming Hannah for my mate disappearing, that I did not take the time to study the bond properly.

I thought Hannah was wrong about me rejecting her, thought that she was exaggerating, but it seems she wasn’t.

“Theta Aidan wants to take us to the guest house,” Fabian calls from behind me, bringing me out of my thoughts.

“Are they trying to get rid of us so quickly?” I asked, melancholy lacing my words.

“No. It’s been a long day for our men, and we need to rest. Hannah told him that we can have a proper meeting tomorrow morning as scheduled,” Fabian answers, heaving a tired sigh.

I nod, finally looking away from the direction Hannah disappeared in to face my beta.

“You knew she was the alpha here, didn’t you?” I ask sadly. Fabian stiffens, averting his gaze from me before nodding.

“I do,” he answers, giving me a sad smile. “You had placed a command on the pack that no one was to talk to you about her, so it was hard to get the paperwork to you. But she’s done well for herself and Saben,” Fabian continues, a smile on his face.

“Did you know he was my son?” I ask, trying to hold back tears. Five years. I missed the first five years of my child’s life all because I believed those rumors.

“Hannah never said it, but I figured you were since you spent three days locked in your room with her during your rut.”

Silence passes between us, and I take a deep breath, my heart twisting as I take in Hannah’s scent once more.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I whimper, feeling defeated.

“Like I said, you ordered the pack not to say anything to you about Hannah. Saben is her son, so even if I wanted to tell you, I couldn’t,” Fabian retorts with a snort, crossing his arms over his chest.

“This is all on you, Julian. You believed those rumors years ago. You were the one blinded by rage. You’re the one who banished and rejected Hannah.

” His words hit me like bullets, shattering my heart further, but Fabian is right.

I was the one who hurt Hannah. I was the one who thought she got rid of my mate and banished her.

I was the one who rejected her, even though I didn’t know how it happened.

It wasn’t Hannah who got rid of my mate; it was me.

“Do you think she will take me back?” I ask, feeling a flicker of hope.

Fabian looks at me sadly, shaking his head, and all hope is dashed.

“If you want Hannah back, then you need to grovel,” a female voice chimes in, and I jump, turning to find the vampire behind me.

She sips on what looks like a juice box, but the scent of blood tells me it is something else.

“Oh, this is deer blood. I don’t drink human blood,” the vampire says, noticing my stare.

“But back to the topic of Hannah. If you want her back, apologize to her, grovel at her feet, and show her you are willing to change to have her back. If you can’t do that, then you don’t deserve her. ” With that, the vampire shrugs.

“Aileen, don’t you have some cases to look over?” Theta Aidan steps forward and frowns at the vampire, Aileen, who just smirks at the wolf.

“I do, so good night.” With that, Aileen the vampire zips away.

Theta Aidan sighs, shaking his head at the vampire’s disappearance before turning to face me. “If you can gather your wolves, I will take you to the guest house now,” he says, his tone slightly clipped but still polite.

I nod, linking my pack still in the dining room and telling them to meet me out front as Aidan, Fabian, and I leave the Haven Trail pack house.
