Hannah
Slipping on a baggy shirt, I exit my bathroom to find Fabian already back, his brows furrowed as he slowly packs away my vanity.
“Did you have a good shower?” he asks, his deep voice low and filled with anger.
“I… I did,” I answer, stepping beside my friend and placing a hand on his arm.
“What happened?”
He sighs at my question, placing the jewelry box from my parents gently into a box before taking a seat at the edge of my bed.
“That fucking idiot doesn’t believe the two of you are mates.
He firmly thinks you did something to his ‘mate’ and wanted to keep your inheritance because of it,” Fabian says, picking up one of his dreadlocks and toying with the ends between his fingers.
I frown, leaning against the wall beside my vanity as I ponder this information.
“He hates me because of the rumors, doesn’t he?” I state, my heart clenching with pain.
Fabian just nods, confirming what I already know, and I sigh, feeling defeated.
“I think leaving is a good thing, then,” I say, pushing myself off the wall and wincing.
My body is still healing from the injuries inflicted on me an hour ago, and I can’t help but think that Julian doesn’t deserve me.
“King Julian wanted a mate so badly that he was blinded by baseless rumors,” I say, moving to sit beside my friend and smiling sadly.
“He doesn’t deserve me. One day, he will realize his mistake, and it’ll be too late.
” My voice breaks with this declaration, and tears spill from my eyes once more.
Fabian says nothing as he lets go of his dreadlocks to wrap his arms around me in a comforting hug. We sit there in silence, a sadness settling over us. I know Fabian won’t leave the royal pack; his parents and siblings are still here. I will be on my own once I leave.
“At least you can go to the University of Ottawa now,” Fabian says, breaking the silence.
I burst out laughing, flopping back onto the bed and silently questioning what the hell is wrong with me.
For years, I kept my head down, behaving like an obedient omega.
I silently endured rumors created about me, the hazing, and the pranks that made my duty difficult. And what did I get for all of this?
I got rejected, banished, and hated by the man who should have loved me, who should have believed me.
“I don’t think I am going to go to school,” I admit finally as soon as my laughing fit ends. “I know it is a full ride, and I will only have to worry about living expenses, but I don’t know if I am strong enough to deal with it on my own.”
Fabian looks at me, a sad smile on his lips as he pokes my cheek.
“You are stronger than you look. Since you’re now a rogue, I think you should consider going to school and seeing what’s out there.
Your mom and dad would want you to do this, too,” he says softly, making me groan.
I hate when Fabian is right, and right now, he is.
“Besides, you won’t be alone,” he adds, shocking me.
“What do you mean? Are you leaving the pack as well?” I ask, pushing myself up onto my elbows.
“No. You know I can’t leave my family,” he answers, running a hand along his face.
“But I will be calling you every night to hear how you are doing, to make sure you are eating. Julian may have forbidden the royal pack from talking about you to him, but he did not forbid us from talking to you.” He grins cheekily, making my lips curve into a similar grin.
“Well, even if I won’t be alone, I can’t guarantee that I will go to school,” I point out.
Fabian rolls his eyes at me. “At least consider it, Hannah. You owe it to yourself to be the she-wolf you were always meant to be.” With these words of encouragement, Fabian stands from the bed and stretches.
“Now, this room won’t pack itself. Let’s get this done so we can ship you out on your next journey. ”
He reaches out, grabs my hand, and hauls me off the bed and onto my feet.
Resigning to his playful demands, I begin to help Fabian pack away my things.
I never thought that one day I would leave my pack, but now, I am glad that Fabian gifted me a 2024 Ford Transit Van that he had decked out like one of those Van Life vans that I watch on Instagram.
I know from exploring it on my birthday that the van has enough storage to tuck my belongings away while also providing me with a home on wheels as I figure out what to do with my life now.
“Did you know this would happen when you gifted me my van?” I ask, zipping up the last suitcase full of my clothes.
“No,” Fabian answers sadly, closing a box and taping it shut.
“I bought that van so that you could take a break and go camping or explore Canada,” he adds.
I say nothing but nod. For the last two years, Fabian has been trying to get me to take a break from being King Julian’s guard. I always declined, not wanting to shirk my duties, but maybe I might just do that—take a break and finally explore life.
“If I decide to explore Canada, I’ll let you know,” I say quietly, getting back to work on packing my things.
