Page 87 of Pack Choice
“Ten.”
“Urgh.”
Ava tickles my toes this time. “Come on, out with it. Was it a success? Are you in love? Do you have a date for the wedding?”
I give her a what-do-you-think look.
“But they were nice, right?”
“Yeah, they were nice.”
Ava claps her hands together. “So you’re going out with them again.”
“Well, Hans wanted me to.”
“Oh, Hans is adorable, isn’t he?”
“He’s nice enough.”
Ava whacks my foot. “I’m not sensing much enthusiasm here, Moll.”
“That’s because there is none. The date was a dud.”
“Why?” Ava says with disappointment that makes me feel guilty as hell. “They’re a really sweet bunch of men. They run their own business. They have a nice house. They’re looking for a mate to start a family with.”
“All those things, Ava!” I screech. “All those are reasons why it wouldn’t work.”
Ava blinks and I sigh. “I’m not sweet. I’m a …” I think back to River’s words, groaning inwardly. “And they are far too sweet for me. I need … I need something more.” I sigh again. “I’m just not sure I’m ever going to find it.”
“If you gave them another chance, more time …”
“There was no spark.” I grab her hand and pull her beside me. “You know the one. That thing that has your insides dancing and your skin prickling and all you want to do is–”
“I get the picture, Moll. But sex isn’t everything.”
“I know but it’s a large part of it. Well, it is for me, anyway.”
“Hmmm,” Ava says.
“Are you telling me you could be with a pack that, you know, didn’t turn you on?”
Ava’s cheeks flush tomato red. “Erm … I guess … I guess not. But …”
I study her face, a line of confusion drawn between her dark brows.
“What is it?”
“I guess I’m stuck between choices too.”
“You are, huh?” I say, perking up. I’d much rather talk about Ava’s successful love life than my calamitous one.
“Yes, so you know I had that date with Pack Darius?”
“Yes?”
“And one with Pack London?”
“Yes? And about three other dates too,” I remind her. Ava has been spoiled for choice.
