“I’m trying to understand how the land lies.”
“No,” he says, his gaze meeting mine and hardening. “But I’m intending to make her mine.”
Interesting. Colt is picky. He has his reasons. I’ve never heard him declare something like that before.
“And the bodyguard?”
“What about him?”
“Is she sleeping withhim?”
His eyes flash. I’m not sure if that’s a yes or a no.
“And the brothers?”
“Unlike you, River, I don’t have a reputation that stinks of shit. The brothers won’t be a problem.”
I lift my head and stare out of the glass walls of this pretentious office. I don’t know how he does it. As kids we spent every minute of our day outside. Running through the streets, getting ourselves into all sorts of trouble. I couldn’t be cooped up like this, like a monkey in a cage.
I don’t know how the omega can do it either.
I don’t like the idea of it.
The only place an omega should be caged is in her alpha’s bedroom.
Maybe I need to free her.
Through the glass I can see most of the office workers pretending not to steal glances at me. One or two, hurrying to hide their phones as I peer up. I can also see the omega, working at her desk, engrossed in whatever bullshit I’m sure Colten has her doing.
She’s seriously cute. All blonde and curly with big sapphire eyes. Even cuter now I know Colten’s interested.
“I’m going to ask her out,” I tell him.
Colten growls, his fingers crushing the pieces of paper he’s holding, his hands forming tight fists.
“Leave well alone, River. I’m warning you.”
I flip my gaze back to his. His eyes bore into me.
“Or what?” I ask, kicking my legs.
“Don’t push me, buddy,” he warns.
But pushing’s what I do. It’s why I’ve won more titles than anyone else in the history of my sport. Push the car that little bit harder, push the turns and the speed, push the overtakes and pitstops, push the team, push my competitors. Push, push, push. It’s the only thing I know.
Besides, a bit of healthy competition may be what I need. It’s all been too easy. The girls. The winning. The money.
Nothing’s been a challenge these last few years.
It’s all old and stale.
This, I kick my legs, this could be fun.
