Chapter Twenty-Nine

When my phone vibrated on the counter, I dried the dish water from my hands and checked it to see that that Ms. Cheryl was texting me.

Could you meet me at Miles and Bryce’s office this morning?

Sure, what time?

As soon as possible please ma’am.

Okay, I’ll get dressed to come now. Is everything okay?

It will be. See you soon.

Well, that was an extremely vague way of putting it.

What could she want and why did she want to meet at the lawyer’s office?

After I finished cleaning the kitchen, I headed upstairs so that I could shower and get dressed.

Javyous and the kids were down in the living room, so when I descended the steps he looked in my direction.

Catching me by wrist, he stopped me from walking by. “Ay, where the fuck you going looking like this?”

His hands were rubbing up and down the back of my thighs. Thankfully the twins were fast asleep on the couch, otherwise I would have had to stop him.

“I look regular, baby.” I grinned as I rubbed the back of his head.

All I had on was a simple red shirt and pants set from Fashion Nova and some Gucci sneakers with the matching purse. I also had a Gucci hat on my head because I didn’t feel like getting my hair together.

“If fine as fuck is regular then yeah, I agree.”

“I hate when you do that.” I blushed.

“What make you smile?”

“No make me blush hard,” I answered. “I always feel like my face is about to break.”

“A nigga gon’ always make you smile and blush and shit. I’m your man. If I don’t do it, who will?”

I knew the question was rhetorical, but I answered it anyways. “Nobody, baby.”

“Damn right, because your nigga don’t play.” He grinned. “Give me a kiss.”

Smiling, I leaned in and kissed his lips. I tried to make it one quick peck, but he wouldn’t be JV if he didn’t take it to the extreme.

“Baby, stop,” I squealed and laughed when he pulled me into his lap. “I have to go.”

I was smiling and blushing so hard with how he was eyeing me. Javyous always made me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world.

“Where do you have to go? I thought we were chilling until we drop the twins off with your grandmother.”

“I know, but Ms. Cheryl asked me to meet with her at Allen more times than I can remember, so don’t worry.

Also, I’ve looked into your pops. He’s a model prisoner.

He’s never been in any trouble in there and he has done more than a little bit of self-rehab stuff in there.

I’m pretty sure considering all of that, the amount of time he’s served, and with your statement we should be able to get this done without a trial. ”

His words did comfort me a little, so I relaxed. Worrying wasn’t going to do anything to help the situation, so all I could do was pray on it and put it in God’s hands.

“Oh, question… how long is the statute of limitation for murder?” I asked and both him and Ms. Cheryl looked at me like I was crazy.

“Uh, well, h-here in Crescent Falls, it’s twenty-five years.”

“Okay.” I nodded and picked up my pen.

“Lani, is there something you need to tell us?” Bryce quizzed. “Because we can’t help or protect you and JV if we don’t know.”

“Nope, just asking.” I could tell that he wanted to probe further but decided against it.

After signing the necessary documents, I stood, hugged Ms. Cheryl, shook hands with the brothers, and thanked them repeatedly, then headed out.

“Oh, Lani,” Bryce stopped me. “Tell JV that he’s clear from that fiasco with ol’ girl.”

Thank God!

I didn’t probe because I was sure that JV would call and get all of the details on his own. I was just glad we could put it behind us.

When I made it out to my car, I found Celeste standing there.

“Celeste, what the hell?” I said and laughed when I was closer.

“What the hell is right, bitch! Why would you just text me that you’re at a lawyer’s office then turn your phone off?” she fired back. “What are you even doing here? I’ll fuck JV’s ass up.”

“Girl would you relax?” I laughed. “JV didn’t do anything, I had to see the about my dad.”

“Your dad?” Her facial expression softened. “Is everything okay?”

“I hope.” I shrugged. “JV had them look into getting him out. They needed me to come write and sign some stuff.”

“Friend, that’s lit! Is he going to for sure come home?”

“He couldn’t say, but he is confident that there’s a strong possibility.”

“I love this for you, friend!” she shrieked, pulling me into a hug.

“How did you get here?” I asked, looking behind her. I didn’t see her car.
