“I’m sorry,” I repeated. It was all Icouldsay.

“How touching,” Asa said in a mocking tone. “Two lovers. One scorned. Betrayal has never tasted so sweet.” Those calculating red eyes fell to me. “I warned you to stay away from him, did I not? The funny thing is, I knew you’d disobey me. I knew you’d come crawling to him like a bitch in heat. That’s what makes this all so fun.”

Belphegor flew through the doorway and tucked in his wings. “Enough taunting, my king. I’m sure Pride has already sent warning to Lazarus. The angels will be here to aid them soon.”

“Very well.” Asa sighed and faced Alastair. “Shall we continue? Or will you be a good boy and step aside?”

“You’re not leaving here with Light Bringer.” Alastair gripped his weapon tighter and went into a defensive stance.

“We’ll see about that.” The king smirked before lunging at him.

The two of them collided. Usually, Asa liked to stand back and watch others fight for him, but he had an axe to grind with Alastair.

“Show me why my father favored you,” Asa said, swinging at his head.

Alastair ducked and pivoted around, sparks flying as their swords met. “Jealous?”

“Don’t flatter yourself, Pride. I envy no one. Not now. Not ever.”

Asa had hoped Alastair would join him once, but now he only wanted to see Pride’s head mounted on his wall like a trophy.

My attention was torn from the fight as Bellamy shoved me against the wall. He seethed in front of me.

“Just when I started to trust you, you showed your true colors,” he said, arm braced against my throat and one leg shoved between mine, pinning me in place.

“Now’s not the time for this. Your brothers need you.”

“Where’s that cocky attitude now, Phoenix?” Bellamy growled, leaning closer, face almost touching mine. “You should be gloating.”

“Why would I gloat? I didn’t want—”

“I fell for you!” Devastation shone in his blue eyes. “I fell for your whiskey eyes and soft lips.” He brushed his thumb across them, raw pain lacing in his voice. “I fell for the sleepy rasp in your voice first thing in the morning and how your tail always wraps around me. I started to believe we’d get our happy ending after all. That we didn’t have to be like that asteroid and the planet. And it was all a lie.”

“It wasn’t a lie.” A deep ache burrowed in my heart. “I lov—”

“Save it until after the battle.” Bellamy shoved me hard against the wall before stepping back. “If you survive that long.”

The vitriol in his gaze cut right through me. The disaster I’d anticipated from the very beginning had finally hit.

And it hurt much worse than I ever imagined.

Chapter Fourteen

Shades made up a majority of the army. Cutting through them was easy. But when combined with the horde of mid-level demons and fallen angels who wielded celestial steel weapons, it was only a matter of time before one of us fell.

Or all of us.

Everything we’d fought for up to this point was at stake. The only silver lining in this shitshow? I was too busy fighting for my life to be upset over a broken heart.

Phoenix had betrayed me. Just like my brothers said he would. Why didn’t I listen to them?

Why did I let myself fall for him?

A saber-toothed demon lunged at me. I slit its throat before spinning around and taking out another. They just kept coming. I gritted my teeth and fought harder.

“Kill,”Lust said, aroused by the bloodthirstiness overtaking me.“Kill them all.”
