So do I.
Once Phoenix calmed, I pulled out but didn’t move from my spot on top of him. His arms locked around my waist, preventing me from doing so anyway. His tail had returned to its place wrapped around my thigh. For some reason, I really fucking liked that.
“Has the regret kicked in yet?” he asked against the top of my shoulder.
“The regret kicked in the second I kissed you.” But damn if I wouldn’t do it again. I knew I’d always choose that kiss. Always choose this moment, even if everything that came next destroyed me. Literally.
I wasn’t leaving the underworld alive. Might as well have some fun before I died.
Phoenix skimmed his nose up the side of my neck before kissing me below my ear. It wasn’t sexual though. It felt like he was savoring this. Savoring me. A contrast to the rough sex we’d just had.
“Sex has never been like that for me,” he said. “I’ve always seen it more as a tool.”
“A tool?”
“A means to an end. Probably not much different than it is for you. I’ve heard about your special skill. The one that sends everyone around you into a sexual frenzy. It’s the perfect distraction. Sex can also be quite the persuasion. If you please someone well enough, they’ll offer you certain liberties.”
A hard pang hit the center of my chest. “Has Asa offered you theseliberties? Is that why you smelled like him the night you brought me food in my cell? You’re sleeping with him?”
I had suspected they were fucking before then, but I’d put it out of my head. It didn’t matter to me one way or another who Phoenix fucked. Yet, my gut coiled at the thought of Asa’s hands on him. That would also explain how he knew about wing slits being stimulation points.
A bitter taste landed on my tongue.
“Jealous?”
“No,” I lied.
“Maybe now you know how I feel each time you fuck someone at Krave.”
“Have you been stalking me?”
Phoenix scoffed. “It’s my job to keep an eye on you and your brothers.”
“Sounds like you’ve mainly kept your eye on me.”
“Shut up.”
From the outside, it might’ve looked like I was enjoying all of those hookups. Physically, Ihadenjoyed them. But each encounter had left me feeling empty. Unsatiated. Because the one I had really wanted was the demon currently beneath me, smelling so damn good I wanted to lick, bite, and kiss him all over.
“Be real with me about something. Is this all an act?” I asked, caressing the curve of his horn. “You. Me. This bed. It’s all part of your and Asa’s plan to break me?”
“You know it’s not.” Phoenix turned his face away.
I hooked a finger beneath his chin and turned it right back. “I don’t know shit anymore.”
“Yeah you do.” His gaze hardened. “You feel the same connection I do. But unlike your brothers who get their fucking happily ever after with their mates, you and I are on a collision course. Like a giant asteroid barreling right toward a planet. When it hits, the planet will be destroyed, but so will the asteroid. That’s what this is, Bellamy. Certain death for both of us.” He released a small breath. “Unless one of us changes course.”
“And how do we do that?”
Phoenix unfurled his tail from my thigh and gently pushed against my chest. I rolled off him, and he slid out of bed and grabbed his pants. Deciding it was best to follow his lead, I did the same.
Having my junk hanging out was the last thing I wanted the next time Belphegor barged in to take me to his torture chamber.
I eyed the magic cuffs on the bedside table.
“Relax. I’m not going to put them back on you.” Phoenix tugged on his shirt. It was a tragedy to cover those abs. Plus side? He still had his horns.
Fuck. Why am I so into them?
