Story: Playing With Fire
When I woke up, I was highly disappointed to see I was cuffed to the bed. Instead of convincing them Giulia was trying to fuck with my life, I had only proven to them that I was insane.
“That was some stunt you pulled.”
I strained my neck to see Cap sitting across the room from me. He shut his laptop and stood, walking over to me. “So, would you care to explain why you kidnapped Ryan? Or why you tried to kill yourself?”
“I wasn’t trying to kill myself,” I murmured.
“The stab wound in your stomach would say differently.”
I sighed, knowing I had to find another way to get through to him. “I had a meeting with Giulia.”
“Who’s Giulia?”
I rolled my eyes, irritated that I had to go through this again. “Giulia—the woman who writes the novels we’re trapped in.”
His lips turned up in the corner. “That would be nice, wouldn’t it? To think this is all some crazy story and we have other lives out there waiting for us?”
“I’m telling the truth. She called me in for an interview.”
At those words, he paused, but then continued to sit down beside me. He knew what I was talking about, but wasn’t ready to admit it yet. “And this interview, what did she say?”
“Basically that she’s fucking me over. She doesn’t like my girlfriend she wrote about and she’s killing her off.”
“Why would she do that?”
I tried to toss my hands up, but failed because of the cuffs. “Why does she do any of the shit she does? Why did she make you impregnate your wife a bagillion times?”
His eyebrows shot up in surprise. “I can safely say that I did that to Freckles on my own. And I enjoyed every minute of it.”
“Did you? Do you remember every time you had sex with her? Because I’m pretty sure she didn’t write every sex scene in her books.”
His brows furrowed for a moment as he thought about that. “Does anyone remember every time they had sex?”
“I do!” I snapped. “And do you know why? Because in this series, I’ve only had sex in this book!”
“This book,” Cap repeated.
“Yes, as in, the book we’re currently trapped in.”
“So…you think we’re in a book right now.” He glanced around the room. “All of this is made up in this writer’s mind.”
“Yes!” I said emphatically. “Giulia. Giulia Lagomarsino. This is all her doing. She plays with our lives all willy-nilly with no regard for our feelings as her characters.”
He huffed out a laugh, then shoved to his feet. “I must say, you’re very convincing. This story is…unbelievable at best, but somehow, it makes me really want to help you.”
I was a little shocked by his answer. “You do?”
“Rob, you’ve worked for me a long time. Of course, I want to help you.”
I was so relieved until I realized what he said. I worked for him a long time. He was still trapped in the delusions of the book. And if that was true, his form of help wouldn’t be help at all.
“Cap—“
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of you.”
He walked out of the room without another word. I had to find a way to get out of this. If I didn’t, they’d drug me—all Giulia’s doing—and she’d make sure I could never tell any of them about what was really going on. But there had to be a way.
The door opened and Hunter walked back in, followed by Kate. If I could get her alone, I might be able to convince her. She was the most rational out of anyone.
