Story: Playing With Fire
“They’re trained to get out. Send everyone else, but you stay behind.”
“I don’t leave my men behind. You know that,” I said scathingly.
“You just leave your wife behind,” she said, tears filling her eyes.
“Maggie, since when have you ever needed me? You run off and do your own thing all the time.”
“But I always had you close by. What if something happens and you’re halfway around the world?”
My face softened as I stared at my wife. “You’ve done this many times before, even with triplets. You’ll do great. Besides, we’ll be back before you even go into labor.”
She stepped back, wiping at her face. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”
She turned and stormed out of the room, leaving me feeling like shit. I wanted to stay with her, but the truth was, it was all hands on deck to retrieve Chance’s team. Hell, he’d already been captured once and he just barely made it back to us. I wouldn’t abandon him again. I picked up my bag and headed down the stairs. Maggie was waiting for me, her eyes downcast.
I tilted her chin up, forcing her to look at me. “Nothing is going to happen. You’ll see.”
“I have a bad feeling about this. Don’t let me down, Sebastian.”
“I’ll come home to you. I always will.”
I gasped in pain as we drove over a particularly rough patch of ground and my body jolted. It was starting to come back to me. And it looked like I would be breaking one promise to Maggie, I wouldn’t be coming home just the way I was.

Lola was driving like a crazy person and loving every minute of it. Since she retired from the teams, she rarely saw any action, but the minute we heard about Chance’s team going missing, she was right back in the action. So was I. In fact, I didn’t mean to be. I was perfectly content to stay at home with Kate and the kids. It was the promise I made to her. But she insisted on me going along, that I could save lives.
I remembered staring at her, hating that she was asking me to go to the Amazon. I didn’t want to leave her. I didn’t want to risk everything again. She was the love of my life, and all too often with us, things didn’t go as planned. But she kissed me hard and told me to go do what I do best. How could I refuse that?
“Wolf, tell me that RHIB is ready!” I shouted into coms. It was nearly impossible to hear with the gunfire and the truck roaring. I laid down in the back with Cap as I reloaded, leaning over him to grab another magazine.
“We’re two minutes out,” he answered. “Rocco’s with me.”
“Thank fuck! I’m not sure the medicine I gave Cap is doing the job.”
“Well, that’s what you get when you listen to witch doctors,” he laughed.
I glanced over at Cap, who was staring around the jungle whizzing past us, his eyes wide and his pupils nearly shot. At least we knew the drugs were actually in his system. Now we just had to hope they didn’t kill him.
“What the hell is going on?” Cap asked. “Am I tripping?”
I huffed out a laugh. “Something like that. I had to give you some jungle medicine to counteract the snake bite.”
“Snake bite?” he asked in confusion.
“What’s the last thing you remember?” I shouted, sitting up and firing off a few rounds. When I laid back down, Cap was staring at the sky in confusion.
“I was pregnant with Maggie’s baby.”
“What?” I asked in confusion.
“And Hunter and Sinner were women.”
“What the fuck did they put in that medicine?” I shook my head and sat up again, laying down cover fire. Lola spun the truck, parking right in front of the river. I hopped out, ready to fire when the RHIB came flying down the river. Wolf was shouting like a lunatic, loving this just a little too much.
I grabbed Cap by the shirt and hauled him over the side of the truck. Leaning him up against the side, I slapped him on the face. “Stay. Understand?”
“I don’t leave my men behind. You know that,” I said scathingly.
