Story: Playing With Fire
“I don’t get it. Why would Cap send us down here and then have the entire fucking company come after us?”
“Because Maggie’s pregnant. I bet they all wanted to get away.”
I should have known. Finally, the sounds from inside the hut died down and I grabbed my pack, tossing aside the flimsy curtain to head inside and get a little relief from the heat.
Rob jerked a sheet over the jungle lady and glared at me. “A little privacy, please.”
“Sure, we’ll all wait outside in the heat while you cool down.”
“It would be appreciated,” he said, glaring at me.
“We head to the airport at first light,” I said to Rob as I grabbed a bottle of water and chugged it. “I’m so ready to get the hell out of here.”
He tore his lips from the woman he’d somehow become engaged to, and jumped out of the bed, grabbing his pants on the way. “Wait, we can’t go yet.” He glanced back at his woman, grinning at her as she started stroking her breasts. Holy fuck, I needed to get away.
“We’re leaving as soon as possible. We have what we need, and now it’s time to go home. Sorry, but you’re going to have to leave your fuck buddy behind.”
He laughed like I was joking, but when I stopped and stared at him, his face dropped. “I can’t leave her behind. We were meant to be. Plus, Cap is out there with everyone else searching for your ass. Are you really going to leave him behind?”
I sighed heavily, jerking open my bag to stare down at the clothes inside. Dirty and smelly, there was nothing in there I wanted to wear. And there was no laundromat anywhere in the vicinity. “How about I leave you here with your…person,” I said, tripping over my words, “and I’ll go home to my wife and kids.”
“How is that fair?”
“Look on the bright side, she can see you in action.” I slapped him on the shoulder and zipped up my bag.
“Yeah, but what about firepower? You can’t leave me here to defend myself with nothing!”
“I’m pretty sure Cap left you with a ton of shit. Besides, don’t you have a way to track them?”
“Well, yeah, but I don’t want to go through the jungle on my own,” he grumbled.
“You’re not alone. You have your woman with you. And she’s one hell of a woman, right?”
He turned and grinned at her, but he didn’t seem so confident now. Leaning in closer, he lowered his voice. “See, that’s kind of the problem. She’s like…really awesome. You know what I mean?”
“Maybe a little too much like Maggie,” I answered, getting his drift.
“Right, and what if…what if she finds some other guy and ditches me?”
“Some other guy like you,” I said, leading us to the point.
“Right.”
“In the middle of the jungle.”
“It could happen.”
“Yeah,” I nodded. “Yeah, it could, but I don’t see how she’s going to meet another American with your skills and body that she loves to fuck just as much as you.”
He blushed, ducking his head. “You’re just saying that.”
“You’re right. I am. Now, can we move on?”
I picked up my bag, but he grabbed my arm again. “That’s it? What about us being a team?”
“You came with Cap, not me. That means you should go home with him.”
“Yeah, but you can’t just leave him behind. His wife is about to have a baby!”
