Story: Playing With Fire
“What do you?—”
I pulled my gun and shot him in the gut. Jackson and Gabe jumped back in shock and Cap stared down at the blossoming red hole in his stomach. “Why…why would you do that?”
“Because she needs to be stopped.”
“What the fuck?” Gabe shouted. “You were supposed to hold him hostage. Not shoot him!”
Chance strolled forward, walking around Cap as he stared at him. He drew a sword from his side and swung hard, decapitating our leader. Then he grabbed Cap’s bloody head from the ground and held it up for everyone to see.
“This is what happens when you betray your people! Let it be known that any man, woman, or child who dares to attack us shall be slain!”
I clenched my jaw as Chance got into character—his other character. “Alright, Brutus. There’s no need to be so dramatic.”
“Thy will is my command,” he said, giving a sweeping bow.
An echoing wave surrounded us, and then Giulia stepped through some kind of portal, all decked out like Xena Warrior Princess. She looked good in it, but I would not let that sway me.
“Giulia,” I said, stepping aside for her to see her beloved Cap.
“Rob. I see you’ve stooped impossibly low.”
“I’m not the one killing off characters on a whim.”
She narrowed her eyes at me and snapped her fingers. In an instant, my jungle lady appeared in front of her, bound at the wrists. “Rob, you need to face the facts that this character is not going to be in your future.”
“She’s mine,” I growled, finally feeling every bit of the man I was supposed to be in her books. “I will not let you kill her off.”
“You can’t stop me.”
A dagger was shoved through her stomach from behind, but my lady didn’t even groan in pain. “Esta é parte em que finjo que estou ferido?” Is this the part where I pretend I’m hurt?
I rushed forward just as Giulia pulled the dagger from her stomach. My lady fell to the ground on her knees. “Don’t worry, my love. I’ll rescue you.”
“Você não conseguia nem cozinhar uma refeição.” You couldn’t even cook a meal.
“I love you too,” I said, brushing my thumb across her cheek. “We’ll make many babies and have our own book. Maybe I’ll even have a team.”
“Não o homem de meia-calça. Eu nunca poderia brigar com um homem que pensa que é um super-herói.” Not the man in tights. I could never fight with a man who thinks he’s a superhero.
“What did she say?” Gabe asked.
“She says she loves me and can’t wait to have my babies.”
“It sounded like she said something about a superhero. It sounded like she was talking about Derek.”
My gaze snapped to his. “No, she was saying I’m her superhero.”
“Isto é ridículo. Eu poderia salvar sua bunda em dois segundos,” she said rapidly. This is ridiculous. I could save your ass in two seconds.
“Give up. Your lady is dead!” Giulia shouted.
I stared into the bright eyes of my woman, then back up to Giulia. “No she isn’t.”
“She’s not?” Giulia asked. She walked around and peered at the woman. “That’s weird. I killed her.”
“Apenas tire-o de sua miséria. Vou me juntar ao time e eye ficará feliz.” Just put him out of his misery. I will join the team and he’ll be happy.
“I don’t want you on the team. I’m the writer and I decide who lives and who dies,” Giulia snapped at my woman.
