Story: Playing With Fire
“I hate to tell you this,” Wolf cut in, “but we’re not going home anytime soon.”
“Why not?” I asked, shoving myself into a seated position.
“Because we’ve got company.”
“Oh fuck,” Knight muttered.
“What?” I asked urgently, still unable to see more than a few feet in front of me. “Someone give me a gun.”
“Yeah,” Lola barked out a laugh. “That’s not going to happen. I’m not getting shot.”
“You’re going to leave me here without a weapon?” I snapped.
“Just lay back,” Sinner said soothingly. Then he started stroking my fucking hair. “Shh, it’ll be alright. Sinner’s got you.”
“Would you get your fucking hands off me,” I gritted out through clenched teeth. “ I swear to God, I will shove whatever you gave me up your ass, and then you won’t be able to shit for a month.”
His hand immediately retracted and I heard him step back. “Geez, I was just trying to be comforting.”
“So, not to interrupt…whatever this is, but maybe we want to figure a way out of this?” Wolf asked.
“I got it,” Hunter answered. “Get me close and I’ll jump over to their boat.”
“And you’re just going to take them all out?” Knight retorted.
“You don’t think I can do it?”
“I think the guy holding the machete will cut you to ribbons before you even step on his boat.”
“Right,” Hunter answered. “I guess you’re coming too.”
“Wait!” I shouted. “Where’s my fucking gun?”
“Here,” Sinner shoved something into my hands. “Swing that at them.”
I felt along the wood and tossed it as hard as I could. “A stick? You gave me a fucking stick?”
“Hey, that was a very nice stick. I’m not jumping in the river to get it for you.”
“Alright, everyone ready. The targets are approaching,” Wolf warned.
“I can’t see anything!”
“You’re already blind in one eye,” Knight responded. “This isn’t that much different.”
And then chaos erupted around us. With only blurry vision, it was impossible to make out what exactly was going on. I heard a lot of grunting, saw shapes moving quickly around me, but wasn’t entirely certain how much danger there was. And then I heard the gunshots.
I quickly shoved my body against the side of the boat, trying to protect myself as much as possible. I scrambled to find anything around that might help me protect myself. My fingers clutched onto something hard and I grabbed it, holding it up in case anyone came near me. Shuffling nearby had me swinging as if my life depended on it. I made contact with a body, grinning when a hard thump landed beside me.
“Jesus, Cap. I’m on your side,” Lola groaned.
“Oops,” I said sheepishly. “You know, that wouldn’t have happened if someone would just give me a gun.”
I blinked a few times, trying to clear my vision. It was enough to see her standing guard in front of me. I had never let a woman protect me in my life, and I wasn’t about to start now. Even if she was my employee, I couldn’t allow her to take a hit for me. Ryan would kill me, and I really couldn’t afford more enemies than Maggie at the moment.
I shoved to my feet and grabbed Lola’s arm, thrusting her to the side as I stepped in front of her. Puffing out my chest, I faced down my enemies, determined to kill them even if I couldn’t see them. I held my weapon out in front of me and dared them to attack.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and glanced over my shoulder. “Um…Cap?”
