Story: From the Ashes
“Bianca, you and the whores need to leave.” Dax pries her off the side of his body. She narrows her eyes and then scoffs at him.
“Whatever, Dax. Let’s go, girls. Chad and the boys are over there,” she says a little louder to try and get us worked up. Only we couldn’t give less fucks than we currently do. Chad and his friends are douchebags. They are all second string players on the team. They dream about being us, being kings. Except they never will be.
“So.” Dax turns the chair around so he can straddle it and leans forward on the back part of the chair. “What’s going on with her?”
“How do you know it’s about her?” I smile at him.
He shoots me a look and then turns back to Colt. “Spill.”
“Well, it seems on Tuesdays, our new friend has a visitor that comes in once a week to talk to her.” Colt stops there for a moment to let that sink in.
“A visitor once a week? What, like a doctor or something?” I cock my head to the side.
“A shrink.” Dax looks at Colt, but I can see the wheels turning in his head.
“Exactly. For whatever reason, it’s hush-hush. I mean obviously their conversations are, but the fact that the shrink is even in here is all on the down-low. The fact that our little office receptionist even knows is because she has to sign him in and out. Otherwise, everyone else just ignores the fact that he’s here.” Colt taps the table with his fingers.
“We need those conversations.” Dax turns to me. “We need to know what that bitch is saying in there. She may know something, and patient confidentiality and all, she could be holding whatever my dad is after her for.”
“And how do you expect that to happen? Just walk in and tell them that we’re there to water the plants? Bro, I doubt we can get access to that room.” I shake my head at him. He is crazy if he thinks they will just let us in there.
“Get Hodgens to let you in. She owes us for helping get her husband out of that debt pickle he was in.”
I run a hand down my face. “Fine. I’ll see what I can do.”
“Meanwhile, Colt, you need to hook that room up so we can see and access what is being talked about in there. I need to know everything about her, anything I can get my hands on to destroy every single fiber of her being,” he says through gritted teeth.
His dad is really pressuring him to figure out a way to get Phoenix out of the school. We just don’t know why. But we do as our fathers tell us, because that’s what’s expected. Good little soldiers.
It’s expected that I go to law school, become a lawyer and eventually a politician. Run the town like my father has with the Emerson and Langford seniors. Honestly, I really have no desire to go into politics. Being a lawyer? Yeah, definitely can do that.
But right now, our main concern is getting Red off of this campus. And apparently listening in on her private conversations with her doctor. Now, I know I’m no lawyer, but that definitely breaks a few laws. But let’s be honest, now’s not the time for a conscience.
I push back from the table and head to my biology class, where I get to be lab partners with the one and only Phoenix.
Man, the daggers she threw at me on Tuesday when she realized she was stuck with me for the semester was worth it. She was pissed. Her cute little face got all red, her eyes narrowed on me, and I could hear a cute little growl come from her. I was fucking turned on, and it was difficult to keep my dick from becoming rock hard.
I head out of the library and over to the Emerson building. Fucking Dax and his fucking family name. I shake my head because I know it drives Dax crazy that his dad had a building named after them.
As I walk through the building, I spot her a few feet ahead of me, and my eyes cannot move from her plump ass swaying back and forth as she walks. It’s a crying shame she’s the enemy in all this. Actually, it’s torture. Fucking pure torture.
I speed up and get up next to her, draping an arm around her shoulder. “Hey there, Red.”
She tries to shrug out of my hold, but I pull her closer and keep her right next to me. Other students are staring, their eyes wide and wondering what she’s doing walking alongside me.
“Get off me, Mason.” Her hand touches mine, and it burns with such an intensity that I want to push her up against a wall and take her right here in front of everyone. Fuck.
“Aw, come on, sweetheart. Is that anyway to treat your lab partner?”
“Feel free to switch partners. In fact, I’ll ask for you. I’m sure any other girl in that class would jump at the chance just to breathe the same air as you.” She sticks out her tongue and fake gags.
I smirk back. “Hm. That’s true. They would. I’m a lucky guy. But sorry, no take backs. You, Red, are stuck with me.” She rolls her eyes but doesn’t say anything. She adjusts her backpack, letting out a little grunt as she does, and its then I realize she’s carrying her entire day’s worth of books or whatever she needs for classes.
“Hey, why don’t you put some of that shit in your locker?”
“What? What locker?”
“Um, the locker the school assigns to you. Didn’t anyone tell you that?” I stop in the hall right before the classroom, and the look on her face tells me no one did. “I’ll take you there before lunch. Come on, Red.”
