Story: From the Ashes
“Sad.” I turn back to my plate and start picking away at my fries.
“They’re everything here. The guy with the jet-back hair? That’s Daxon Emerson. Quarterback for our football team, wanted by almost every college out there. Will probably go pro at some point.” She grins. “The blond guy next to Daxon is Mason Turner.”
I take in his dirty blond hair, cut high and tight. He looks pristine. Turner … I know that name.
“Is he—”
“The mayor’s son. Yep. He drips sex, and from what I hear, is a god in bed.”
There’s a twinkle in her eye, and I can see that she definitely has the hots for Mason. Which, by her explanation of things, he’s politician royalty. She could hang off his arm and be set for life.
Liz goes on, “The other one with the beautiful brown hair is Colton Langford. He’s a little more quiet, more into nerdy things, but hotter than sin.”
I stare at his very shaggy hair that falls slightly in front of his face.
“You do know guys are like shoes. The cuter they are, the more they hurt.” My lips curl back in disgust.
Liz rolled her eyes. “Yeah, but I like the cute, pretty shoes.”
As I watch the world stop moving for these three, I notice three very beautiful ladies coming up and greeting them. I cock my head back to Liz. “And they are?” I’m assuming they have some importance.
“The Queens of Darkwood,” she says matter of factly.
“What the fuck did you just say? Am I being punked?” I draw my brows in and narrow my eyes at her.
She chuckles, “No. They really are. Self-proclaimed, but they are the Queens of Darkwood. To most everyone else, they are just the lucky ones that get to hang around the kings all the time. Bianca Bellecourt is the blonde and captain of the cheerleading squad.” Of course the bitch is. I scoff at the information, and Liz continues. “Tiffany Ives is the small brunette to her right, and Jacklyn Greenwood is the taller brunette to her left.”
“Wait, okay, I thought you said that girls want to be claimed by the almighty douchebags.” I shake my head in confusion.
“The queens are associated with the kings; they belong to them in the hierarchy of things. Top of the food chain.”
“So, what is everyone else?”
She shrugs. “Lowly commoners who are just fighting to get that crown.”
“But I thought you all come from money?” This shit is too fucking much.
“Yes, but those six are richer than all of us. Their parents run this town, probably even beyond this town.”
I gather up my tray and pick up my things. “This was a nice little dinner and all, but I’d like to get back to the room. This is all just too much for me to even deal with … ever.” I walk my tray over to the trash and dump the barely eaten burger. I place the tray on the belt next to the bin and turn around to head out of this strange wonderland I’m in.
As I make my way through the chattering crowd of annoyingly peachy students, I look up and meet the greenest pair of eyes I’ve ever seen. For a moment, my step falters, but I try to recover and hope to fuck no one noticed.
But he did. Daxon Emerson saw my misstep. His lips curl up into a sinister smile, and I shudder. I hold my head high and head out of the dining hall. The cool wind hits my face outside, and I take a deep breath.
I make my way back around the winding path towards the dorms, but a chill races down my spine as I get that feeling that I am being watched again. This time, I don’t bother to look around; I head back to the confines of my dorm. This fucking place is a creepy mother fucking place.
Head down, get through this year.
Somehow, I don’t think it will be that easy.

DAXON
Beep!Beep!I reach over and pick up my phone to turn off my alarm. Seven fucking-o’clock. I could use another hour at least of sleep.
Rest is not something I have time for, though. I love playing football, but I really hate the constant conditioning and keeping up with the workouts. But if I want to make it into the NFL after college, I need to keep pushing myself and my body. Fuck, anything to get out from under my father’s hold on me.
