Story: Abandoned Oaths
“You made an impression. Well, now we need you to find the perfect date outfit.” She paused. “I have an idea!”
Rey was gone in a flash.Emilia turned and went back into the fitting room. She sighed heavily, likely forgetting we could still hear her.
“It will be okay. This can work to our advantage.” Marco’s voice was surprisingly gentle.
“I know, but this day has been . . . a lot.”
“You’re not enjoying playing dress up?” Cruz asked.
“It’s a waste.”
A soft bang thumped in my ear like she hit her head.
“Years of hard work and deadly tasks to go on dates with rich men? If the team I trained with knew. . . .” She sighed again.
Javier turned cheerleader. “Hey! You’re doing everything perfectly. A date with our target’s number one enemy is hardly a waste of time. If anything, it will get the ball rolling faster.”
He rarely gave out praise so freely while we were working, but it seemed to be just what she needed.
“Okay. You’re right,” she mumbled.
Great. Now I got to watch her go out with the slippery dick head and keep how badly I wanted to punch him in his pinched face off my own.
CHAPTER 12
Emilia
The apartment buzzed with activity, which was the exact opposite of what I’d hoped. I wanted a nap or to at least put my feet up after walking around in heels all day.
“We’ll get these put away.” Derek lifted one of his hands, laden with bags, and took the few I carried from me.
Cruz slipped onto the boat twenty minutes before us and hunkered down, so he didn’t have to take a separate one back to Fisher Island.
That it took all three of us to get everything up was embarrassing, but also quite the achievement. My guilt disappeared as the pain in my feet increased. This was a job that required a uniform. Buying it for me was the least the Pack could do since I was risking my life and sacrificing an unknown amount of time over this one man.
His business better be worth it. They better be the threat the Pack thought they were.
If I found out after this was all done that it was all a lie, that Dias wasn’t as powerful as we thought? Well, I’d need an extended vacation. Again, paid for by the Pack.
“Dinner should be ready in about twenty minutes,” Marco called out from the stove as I passed the kitchen.
“Didn’t you hear?” I reached down and pulled off my shoes. “I have a dinner date.”
“Yeah, but no one ever gets full eating places like that, and you shouldn’t drink on an empty stomach,” he said, not turning around.
He was worried about whether I’ll be hungry later?
“I don’t drink on jobs.”
I’d hold one to blend in, but I stayed clear-headed when I worked.
He paused mid stir and turned. “He’s Italian, and the owner. If he offers you wine, refusing could be an insult.”
“I don’t particularly care. He’s not the one I’m trying to impress.”
“Things are too precarious for you to offend or anger someone like Brazzi. Just play along. You don’t have to finish the drink. If you can, get rid of it without him noticing.”
“Just toss it over my shoulder? We aren’t going to a dive bar. Can’t I just say it’s a religious thing?”
