Story: Abandoned Oaths
“Fine, so what do we do until then?”
He looked around the room. “Hang out?”
This time, I did groan. “I’m not exactly the type to sit still and look pretty.”
“No shit,” Marco sneered.
“You can train with us,” Cruz offered.
I cocked a brow. I hadn’t scared him off yet? “Do we have a private gym?”
As shifters, we couldn’t do much of anything in one with public access. There was no way to explain our speed, strength, or quick healing.
“Yeah, it’s down that hall.” Javier pointed in the direction from where he’d come.
Well, that was a surprise. At least I wouldn’t grow weak in my time here. Maybe I could even get them to spar with me. That could entertain me for a few minutes.
“That’s where we have the surveillance room set up too.”
Marvelous. This was progress. I normally did my own or had a report sent to me by someone who’d been watching my target.
“What do we have on him?”
“His home address, known associates, business locations––”
“That’s it?” I cut off Derek.
“We got into his personal calendar today,” Marco added.
I shook my head. “I don’t need to know his damned address or any of the basic shit anyone with internet access could give me. I need to know his favorite restaurant. What cafe he gets his coffee from. How he takes that coffee. Who his favorite designer is. Does he buy custom or have everything tailored? Where does he take his dates? Where does he take them on a second date? Is it a club if it’s just a hookup, or does he go all out for every woman? I need a list of all his exes.” I rubbed at my temples. “My mission is to form a romantic relationship with this man. I need to know what makes him tick. What his tells are. Not where he launders his money!”
I stood and began pacing.
For a second, just one, I thought they might actually have things under control. Ha!
They were just muscle. Here to sell the story.
As always, I was on my own.
CHAPTER 6
Javier
I watched her take three steps before spinning and taking another three. The area between the sectional and the wall wasn’t very big.
She had a point, though.
The guys and I had been treating this like one of our normal jobs.
But this was a unique situation, as unique as the woman before me.
In two days, she’d be stepping into a new world and infiltrating one of the most dangerous organizations in the world.
And she’d be doing it on her own.
We were backup, but, in the end, she was the one that had to lure Dias in. She had to gain his interest, attention, and trust.
Shit.
