Story: Abandoned Oaths
He stayed silent throughout the entire flight and car ride, working on his laptop. Once the driver pulled up to a marina, he finally spoke to me.
“Ready?” He held open the car door and looked at me with a bored expression.
At least I didn’t have to swat away his hand. He didn’t bother offering.
“Does it matter?” I climbed out and straightened the short skirt I changed into on the plane. It was a soft satin, or maybe silk, in a champagne color that perfectly complimented my deep tan skin.
The matching tank top wasn’t as flattering. Whoever picked out the ensemble clearly didn’t know me or my sizes. It was too tight in the bust and clung to my hips, not in a sexy way. More like, did you bother trying it on before buying?
“This way.”
Rod held out his hand, and I started down the stairs to a long wooden dock lined on both sides with boats ranging from small harbor cruisers to enormous yachts.
“Are we living on a boat?” Is that what heiresses did?
“No, the details were in the email. We’re taking that to the island.” He pointed to a white and red speed boat two slips ahead.
Right, the email he sent that I hadn’t bothered opening yet. If there was anything I really needed to know, he should have told me instead of giving me the silent treatment.
I eyed the boat as I approached a man waiting in a white polo and matching shorts. He extended his hand. “Welcome, Miss Torres.”
I accepted his help without flinching at his touch or my name. Look at me, already a perfect actress.
“Mr. Reyes?” He greeted Rod with another wide smile. “How were your travels?”
“Fine.” Rod bypassed him and stepped down onto the white leather seat, then down next to me.
“We’ll have your luggage follow us over.” Our captain moved to the seat behind the wheel. The motor started, loud enough to rattle my brain.
I glared at Rod. “Is this really necessary?”
He either heard me or could read my lips because he nodded.
I shook my head. “I have to take a boat every time I come or go?”
He nodded again. He and Coach would get along great.
“You don’t see any problems arising because of that?” Like no ability to escape if necessary? No quick getaways? No access to stores or food? What if I had a late-night craving?
“It’s expected.” He finally used words. Progress.
I raised a brow.
“You’re an heiress, remember?”
I waited.
“Fisher Island is where you belong.”
Okay, so it was a fancy shamncy place for the uber-rich, but that didn’t make the assassin in me comfortable at all.
After a quick ride, we docked. The captain cut the engine before jumping onto the seat to step off and tie the boat, so we didn’t float away.
“Here we are.” His hand was there again, and I took it just long enough to not slip and fall into the water.
“Thank you.” I waited for Rod to join me before walking off like I knew where we were going.
“There.” He pointed over my shoulder to a high rise just to the left.
