Story: Abandoned Oaths
“It’s the––”
“The block?” Rey’s eyes widened, and I swear she missed a step. “I didn’t know there was a pool there.”
“It’s on the roof. This is so soft.” Emilia trailed a finger over the top of the table in front of her.
“You live in the penthouse?” Rey tried to play it cool, looking through a rack of clothing, but her sudden interest was hard to ignore.
Emilia didn’t call her out, continuing to play dumb.
“Yes, I wanted a house, but my father assured me I’d have more privacy on Fisher Island. Since we converted one of the bedrooms to a gym, it isn’t so bad.”
Rey paused, looking through the hangers. “Your father? Is he someone famous?”
“Well, that was direct.” Javier huffed a laugh.
Emilia laughed it off and shrugged. “I doubt anyone knows his name. He prefers to keep a low profile unless he’s in the boardroom, but I don’t want to bore you. I’ve never met anyone who found oil interesting.”
“Oil.” Rey’s eyebrows flew up to surprising limits.
“Yeah, I asked him why he couldn’t have picked something like gold or jewels. Even the tech guys have exciting things to talk about.”
“Sounds hard.” The clerk managed not to sound condescending.
“Anyway, enough about that stuff. I moved here for a chance to be my own person. I don’t want everyone associating me with my family like in L.A.”
Rey nodded along. “I understand. We’ll let’s get you set up so you have something to wear besides bikinis.”
Emilia laughed and followed her around the store, pointing out things she liked and explaining what she didn’t. It took longer than all the other places, but she finally went into a dressing room. I was about to relax when the door opened and a man in a suit entered.
He stood out from the rest of the customers, so I watched as he approached another employee, who waved Rey over.
The man handed Rey a small envelope, then immediately left.
“What was that?” Marco asked.
“I’m not sure.” I crossed toward her when Emilia stepped out of the fitting room and called her over.
“Shit.” I wasn’t going to intercept Rey in time.
“Don’t overreact,” Javier ordered. “There’s no reason to believe it’s dangerous.”
“The man arrived in a black SUV. I got the plates.” Cruz rattled it off while I watched Emilia.
“This was just delivered for you,” Rey announced, grinning.
“Oh.” Emilia looked up and searched for me. I nodded when she found me, and she took the envelope and opened it. “It’s an invitation.”
“Read it aloud, just loud enough for people to overhead,” Javier instructed.
She tilted her head. “Dinner tonight at Soeur? At eight. Yours, Leo.”
Rey’s jaw dropped. “Soeur? It’s literally impossible to get in there.”
“Shit, why can’t that guy take a hint?” Marco barked.
“You have to accept. You can’t snub him. Plus, this will definitely make it back to Dias.” Javier frowned. “Sorry, Emilia.”
“Not when you’re the owner,” Emilia smiled at Rey, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I met him at the event as well.”
