Story: Abandoned Oaths
“No, he uses it so infrequently that we only put a camera on it.”
Javier leaned back and stared at the blank ceiling. “Why would we go through the effort to get a camera on the ship but not a mic?”
“It wasn’t me!” Derek shot back. “It was a beta team Rod had go through Dias’ lesser known and used properties and boats and shit.”
“Where is this?” I pointed at the screen.
“It’s anchored just beyond the boundary of international waters.”
I stared at Derek. “What the hell does that mean?”
“Twenty-four miles.”
“They’re on the move,” Marco interrupted the mental calculations I was failing to complete.
Javier was already turning up the volume and moving the feed as Emilia and Alessio walked through the house.
“There’s no way.” She laughed as he threw open the front door to reveal a dozen shopping bags in various colors. “The stores aren’t even open yet!”
“One of the many perks of being Ama’s brother. She’s friends with everyone. She called in a few favors.”
Emilia bent over and peeked into the bags. “I’m going to assume they’re all the right sizes too.”
“I won’t tell her you dared to question that.” Alessio laughed and gathered the bags, bringing them back to his bedroom.
“I’ll pack these up if you want to jump in the shower. We need to leave in ten.”
“Thanks.” She kissed his cheek before moving to the bathroom.
“Fuck,” Marco leaned against the wall. “We have ten minutes to figure out where she’s going, get there first, and set up surveillance.”
“How? It’s a surprise. He’s not going to tell her,” Derek snapped.
“Shut up,” I muttered as I zoomed in on Alessio’s phone. He was typing something out, and I wanted to see if that might give us any hints. “He’s talking to himself.”
I turned the volume all the way up, but he was being too quiet to hear.
“Text her. Ask her if she can hear him,” Marco recommended.
“Her phone is right there,” Javier pointed to the nightstand.
“If she can, she’ll let us know.” I stared at the screen, willing the resolution to match my heightened sight. Fuck, if I was there, I’d know.
“He said he was taking her somewhere special, where she could get to know him.” Javier stared at the screen. “Somewhere within range of his helicopter.”
“About four hundred miles,” Derek added.
I pulled up a map and created a four-hundred-mile radius around Miami. One location immediately stood out. “He’s taking her to Cuba.”
There were plenty of other options, most of Florida, the Bahamas, the Keys, but I knew in my gut I was right.
“He’s taking her home,” Javier agreed and immediately reached for his phone. “I’m telling Rod.”
He left the room while we watched Alessio pack two suitcases.
“Cruz, look up flights. We can try to get the plane, but it might be in use.” Marco ordered, “Derek, start getting our bags together. We need to be ready to leave ASAP.”
We got to work calling while he disappeared. Using the Pack’s plane would be ideal, but it could be anywhere in the world right now. We weren’t exactly high enough on the priority list to demand it get here quickly. Commercial was our best bet.
