“Well, that’s nice of whoever did that,” Tanner says.

Kendall smiles. “Yeah. Super nice.”

An older woman with bright red hair approaches as Brayden scampers off. “Kendall! I didn’t know you’d be back today. I thought you had plans.”

Kendall gives the woman a hug. “I did. We went to the zoo, but I wanted to show my friends the Sunshine Program. I hope that’s okay, Margot.”

Margot squeezes Kendall’s shoulder. “Of course, it is!” She holds out a hand to shake ours. “Welcome! I’m Margot, the activities director here. I’d be lost without Kendall’s help.”

“She loves it here, and we can see why. What you’re doing here is amazing.”

“We do what we can,” Margot says. “What brings you to Boone?”

“Our friend’s wedding,” I tell her. “Our buddy actually married Kendall’s best friend. That’s how we all met.”

“Well, isn’t that lovely! Where are you from? Do I sense a bit of a southern accent?”

I laugh. “We’re actually from the Atlanta area originally, but we live in New York City now.”

Margot nods. “I know a southern gentleman when I meet one. What do y’all do for a living?”

Kendall clutches her bag beside me. She’s been doing that the whole time we’ve been at the Sunshine Program campus. What is in that bag that has her so freaked out? She wasn’t doing that when we were at the zoo, so it must have something to do with the program or someone here.

“I work in real estate,” I tell Margot.

Trace chimes in after me.

“I run a tech company.”

“And I’m in banking,” Tanner says.

Margot gives Kendall an odd look, making her hold the bag even tighter. “Well, you certainly have a wide range of abilities, don’t you? That might come in handy if someone wanted to start their own non-profit.”

“You mean an extension of the Sunshine Program? Delia said something about that.”

“Sure, it would work for that. Other things, too. Like if someone—”

Kendall cuts her off. “They definitely have a range of skill-sets, Margot. But they’re on vacation, so I’m sure they don’t want to talk shop.”

I’ve never seen Kendall be so rude before, but Margot only laughs it off. “My apologies, boys. Kendall is right. You should be enjoying the time off. I hope you’ve gotten to see the great attractions our town has to offer. The natural history museum is wonderful.”

I grin. “Yes, Kendall took us there. It was fantastic!”

“Excellent! Well, I think you’re in good hands here with Kendall, so I’ll leave you to it. I hope you enjoy your trip, and remember what I said about helping people!”

I’m not sure exactly what she said about helping people since she was kind of talking in circles, but we all nod and watch her leave.

“Sorry about that, she can be a bit much.”

“No, she’s great,” I say. “I can see why you like her. And why you love the Sunshine Program.”

Kendall still hasn’t released her grip on her bag. “Yeah. Thanks for coming with me. I’m glad I got to show it to you.”

“What’s in your bag?” I ask.

She drops the purse, letting it hang off her shoulder. “What do you mean?”

“You’ve been holding it like it’s carrying the world’s greatest secret.”
