“What do you have a spark for?”

I think about my non-profit idea. It’s such a stupid pipe dream that will never happen, but that’s where my true passion lies.

“I want to help people,” I say. “I’d like to start a non-profit that offers no-interest loans to struggling small businesses.”

“Then do it!” Lucy says, as if it’s that easy. “I know you can’t just do it overnight, but you’d be great at running your own charity. I’ve seen you at the Sunshine Program. Nothing makes you happier than helping people.”

“I didn’t realize it was that obvious.”

She reaches across the table to squeeze my hand.

“You’re a caring person, Kendall. It’s in your nature. It makes perfect sense to me that your dream job involves giving money to people who need it.”

“Thanks, Luce,” I say. “Maybe someday I’ll make it happen, but I’m not holding my breath.”

“You never know what might happen.”

For some reason, the guys pop into my head. When I went to Trudy’s wedding, I didn’t expect to meet three amazing men. I certainly didn’t expect them to eat me out during the reception, nor did I expect them to take my virginity. Sometimes opportunity springs up when you least expect it. I just have to hope that my non-profit follows the same pattern.

Lucy sips her beer, giving me a weird look.

“What’s with you?”

“What are you talking about?” I ask a bit too quickly.

“You met someone!”

My mouth opens and closes, but I don’t know what to say. How could she have figured that out just by looking at me?

“I was right, wasn’t I!” she says triumphantly. “Tell me who he is!”

“It’s no one,” I mumble. I certainly can’t tell her it’s three different guys. There’s no way she’d understand. I don’t know why I ever thought we could talk about this in the first place.

Lucy’s smile is smug.

“You don’t have to give me details, but I know that look. You’re getting laid.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, sweetie. You’ve got it bad!”

I bury my face in my hands. “I really do! It’s complicated, though.”

“He’s not married, is he?”

“No!” I answer immediately. “No, it’s just a weird situation.”

Her face falls.

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes, I swear. It’s totally fine and consensual, and I’m having a great time.”

“Okay, that doesn’t sound suspicious at all,” she says. “I get if you don’t want to talk about it, but I’m here if you ever need to chat.”

I offer her a grateful smile.

“Thanks, Luce. That means a lot to me.”
