Seraphina

I bit into the stolen hot dog aggressively, annoyed that we were once again eating old ass hot dogs.

But the good news was we were leaving. South Carolina would be a bad dream after tonight.

Tibby and I were able to steal enough cash to buy a computer, and within a few hours we had train tickets and new identities.

She was a real whiz with computers, and she was teaching me too.

I didn’t have the same natural talent as Tibby, but I was a fast learner.

We met not long after I burned Mr. Rigby’s gym to the ground, with him in it.

I was hiding in a shitty homeless shelter.

Neither of us trusted anyone but ourselves, and somehow that bonded us.

Now here we were, two years later, finally getting out of the gutters we hid in and starting fresh.

New York City, the perfect city to disappear amongst millions of people.

The endless ocean with its crashing waves stilled the rumbling storm within me. I scrunched my toes, digging them into the sand as I ate the last of the stale food and contemplated our future. Tibby plopped down next to me.

“I’ve got all our things packed in the rental car.” Tibby smiled. “All two bags of stuff.”

I snorted a laugh. “We’ll have lots of stuff soon. Clothes. Weapons…”

Tibby laughed. “I can’t wait for the weapons. What should I get first?”

My simple pocketknife stuck out of the sand in front of me. I kept it with me at all times. Too many bad things happened to us both and I refused to go anywhere unarmed. Not long after Tibby and I met, I told her about my plans for revenge. She was all in and had her own plans for revenge too.

“I want a dagger. Something sharp as shit and easy to conceal.”

Tibby nodded. “I want a gun. With a silencer. So I can catch my stepdad off guard when I kill him.”

My face scrunched in anger over my friend’s suffering. “I swear I will help you get vengeance, Tibby.”

She stared back at me, her silvery blonde hair swaying with the ocean breeze. “I swear it too.”

Something tingled beneath my skin, and I picked up the pocket knife.

Without thinking, I sliced into my hand.

Tibby held out her hand instantly, and I sliced into hers as well.

We pushed our bloody palms together and threaded our fingers.

Heat rushed through my veins, making me gasp. Tibby’s eyes went wide with curiosity.

“I will always have your back, Tabitha.” I said the words as a massive wave splashed against the sand.

Tibby’s eyes were full of wonder. “And I will have yours, Seraphina.”

I didn’t know what was happening, but something shifted as we swore our allegiance to each other under the stars.

A storm was coming, and the future was fully uncertain, but we were in this together.

I loved her like a sister, and I would do everything to protect her, just as she would do the same for me.
