My heart is racing.

Because Luther’s daughter is here.

But also because Luther’s hand is still gripping the front of my shirt from when he shoved me behind him.

He didn’t even hesitate.

We heard the door downstairs, and Luther dropped my hand, grabbed my shirt, and put himself directly between me and the danger.

The danger turned out to be his daughter, but damn.

Be still my fucking heart.

“Dad?”

The voice sounds closer.

Luther releases his grip and turns to face me.

His eyes are wide, his oh fuck expression matching my own.

“Bedroom,” he whispers as he grips my shoulders, turning me around.

I try to keep my steps silent as I rush back through the double doors.

With my flight mode on and activated, I dart to the side, into the bathroom.

My racing heartbeat is the only sound I can hear, but I make sure to breathe quietly.

After a moment, I slowly turn around and peek back into the bedroom.

It’s empty.

And the double doors are closed.
