Luther

“Uh, Luther?” Sterling types something into his phone.

“What?” I eye him warily, his tone putting me on edge.

“Remember that favor I owe you?” he asks.

“Yeah.” I nod slowly.

This can’t be good.

“You’re cashing it in now.” He starts to stand.

“Why?” I swing my leg over the bench and follow him up.

“Fisher just texted me. Joe’s here.”

We all turn to look at Kendra.

Her eyes widen. “Well, that’s not good.”

Same page.

And dammit, now I owe Fisher one.

The girls stand at the same time.

“I’m gonna need this backstory, but you can come hide out with me at the house. I have to go relieve Simpson from babysitting duty, anyway,” Courtney offers to Kendra.

Kendra nods. “That would be awesome.” She turns to me and shrugs, at a loss for better options. “Text me when he’s gone?”

Her eyes are still wide, but her expression is more disbelief than frantic.

Glad one of us gets to run and hide.

“Take your food,” I tell her before she can step away from the table.

Kendra reaches for her plate but pauses and reaches into the bag.

She pulls the brownie out and sets it on my plate.

The fucking brownie.

Her gaze flits up to meet mine. And she whispers, “Good luck.”

Then she’s rushing away with Courtney. Out the door and into the woods.
