“Now…” Luther rubs his hand up and down my thigh. “I make you breakfast.”

“Breakfast?” I tilt my head back to look at him.

He nods. “Let me feed you.”

My eyes move to his lips.

They’re so close.

He’s so close.

I want to lean into him.

Remove the inches between us.

I want it so bad.

But I know it’s too soon.

So instead of pressing my lips to his, I slide off his lap.

And then my phone rings.

I grab it off the deck railing and recognize the caller.

“It’s work,” I tell Luther.

“Take it.” He stands from the chair. “I’ll bring you fresh coffee.”

And he does.

Then, twenty minutes later, he sets an egg and cheese sandwich on the desk next to my keyboard.

I mute the call I’m on as the woman on the other end keeps talking. “Sorry, the website is glitching?—”

Luther holds up a hand. “Don’t apologize.” He leans down and presses a kiss to my forehead. “I’ll see you tonight.”

The smile he gives me is soft.

And it breaks my heart a little.

Then the voice on the phone asks a question.

I look away from Luther to unmute my call, and when I look back up, he’s gone.
