I’m so happy to see Luther.

This tiny human might look sweet and sleepy now, but she’s been a damn demon creature for the last fifteen minutes. And that was after she barfed breast milk all over me.

I still want to gag just thinking about it. But thankfully, Courtney had laid a blanket over me before she handed me her little grizzly bear cub, so the blanket took most of the damage.

When Ursa finally passed out, Courtney took the reprieve to run upstairs and change, since her shirt took a hit of blowback.

I resist shuddering, holding as still as I can, because if this gremlin wakes up and starts crying, I might start crying too.

It’s been a long time since I’ve come to terms with the fact that I won’t have children, so I don’t really think about it much. And even before that, I never really thought about it. Was never really a baby person.

They’re great for some people.

I can understand the concept of desiring them.

But the reality… No, thank you, sir. Not my thing.

And days like today are the perfect reminder that I enjoy my life just how it is.

I have a new job I like.

I have a good relationship with my dad.

I like living out here in the mountains.

And… Luther.

I like Luther.

“Hi,” I whisper to the man as he steps into the room.

The side of his mouth pulls up, but the smile doesn’t reach his eyes.

My own lips pull down. “Everything go okay with my dad?”

While I was busy over here getting yarfed on, Luther was stuck pretending to act normal while my dad surely talked his ear off.

Luther nods as he crosses the room, taking a seat beside me on the couch.

“You sure it went okay?” I’m still whispering, but I have to ask again because he seems off.

He nods again. “Yeah, just sulking because we keep getting interrupted.”

I huff a laugh. “Maybe next time we go hang out in the middle of the woods.”

He purses his lips. “That’s not a bad idea.”
