Chapter Five

Shane

C losing my eyes, it’s Lily I see as I pound into Stevie and bust my load. I wait a few seconds till the feeling in my legs return. I come to my senses and slide out of my favourite club hangaround. Discarding the condom, I tuck myself back in my jeans.

“I’ll catch up with you later,” I tell Stevie.

“Hey! I haven’t even got my panties back on yet and you’re leaving?”

“I’ve got shit to do.”

“Like what?”

I sigh. “Come on, Stevie, let’s not do this.”

“Do what? Spend time together besides when your dick is inside me?”

“And do what?”

She cringes and I’m not blind, that I don’t see I’ve upset her. “Look, you’re a cool girl and I like hanging out with you, but you’re not my old lady. I don’t have to tell you shit.”

“You know what, you’re right. Just go.”

I turn to leave but then stop. “Are you cool? I don’t want to upset you, I’m just not looking for more than…”

“A quick fuck.”

“It’s not always quick.” I snort.

Rolling her eyes, she waves me off. “I’ll see you around, Shane.”

With Stevie dealt with I walk around the corner, and Lily is talking with her brother. I’m heading to my truck as Slade calls out, “Shane! Are you headin’ into town tonight?”

I wasn’t planning on it but I find myself saying, “Yeah. What do you need?”

“Can you give my sister a ride to her motel? Her car’s fucked.”

“Sure.”

I jump in the truck and slam the door. I bring the engine to life as Slade walks Lily over and opens the passenger door for her. She scoots in and he closes the door.

“Every day will be easier, remember that.”

“I will.”

Slade tips his chin and I’m good to go. I don’t know what I’m expecting but driving away from the club, it’s silent. I turn the radio on and roll through the stations until something other than oldie music fills the truck. It’s still not enough. Her silence is enough to drown out the music.

“Usually I don’t keep running into my one-night stands,” I tease to break it.

She snorts. “Well, it is my luck to fuck a club brother, so maybe it’s my bad luck rubbing off on you.”

“I must’ve been more wasted than I thought to miss your sparkling personality.”

She doesn’t look at me and I return to looking out at the road.

“You weren’t interested in my personality. Men are only interested in one thing, and it’s always been between my legs.”

I wish I could remember how it felt between her legs. I say nothing and push down harder on the gas. As we approach town, darkness has fallen, and I can’t wait to sink a few beers.

She goes from slouched in her seat to sat straight. “Drop me off at Josie’s.”

I’m already turning the steering wheel to turn into the motel when she leans over and yanks the wheel.

“What the fuck!”

“Josie’s! Take me to the bar.”

This is strange. There’s nothing obvious out of place at the motel that I can see. The parking lot is half filled with cars and a couple of motorcycles, and the manager fixing the vacancy sign.

A few moments later I pull into Josie’s and kill the engine. She doesn’t move to get out and cranks her neck to look out the back window. I check the mirrors and there’s no one behind us. The streets are quiet this evening.

“Are you good?” I ask her.

“I’m fine.” It’s clearly a lie but I leave it alone. “You can go now.” She throws open her door, and making sure she has her purse, she jumps out and heads toward Josie’s.

I was going to hit Snakes bar tonight, but I decide to stick around. It’s the usual suspects in tonight and I slide onto a stool beside Lily at the bar.

Evey time someone walks in, she jumps and then relaxes when it’s not who she thinks it is.

I’ve guessed that someone’s in town that she doesn’t want to see.

Could it be an ex-boyfriend? I can’t think of anyone else that could spook her like this, but then again, I don’t know anything about this woman apart from I woke up beside her one time.

“Who are you expecting?”

“I’m not. Why do you think I’m expecting anyone?” she rambles on.

“Sorry, I stand corrected.”

She signals to Josie for another drink. I nurse my beer, choosing to stay coherent.

The tension is radiating off of her and I’m getting the impression I need to be on my guard.

I’m surprised to see how much she drinks but that she’s still able to walk and talk.

I don’t know how she drinks so much and not pass out.

Josie calls last orders and then threatens to get her baseball bat out ten minutes later if no one leaves. As I walk Lily to the motel, she slows as we get near and then relaxes when she doesn’t see what she thought she was going to see.

“Are you gonna tell me what the fuck tonight has been about or you still gonna act like it’s been nothing?”

She shrugs. “It has been nothing. I’m fine.”

There’s another lie. The only difference from earlier tonight and now are the motorcycles are gone.

“Sure.”

“I’d invite you in, but I’m done making bad decisions.”

“Wow, you sure know how to make a guy feel good,” I retort.

“There’s no point beating around the bush.”

I hang back on the street and watch her cross the lot and let herself into her room. I’m about to leave and go back to my truck when I see her immediately look out of the window.

She’s expecting someone and she’s scared. That much is obvious. I walk back to Josie’s, jump in my truck, and drive the short distance back to the motel. I park up across the street and settle in.

I wait for the light to go out, but it stays on.

Every now and then, she pokes her nose out between the shades, takes a quick peek and then closes them again.

It had to have been the motorcycles. Rides that don’t belong to anyone in the Lost Souls MC.

I could call Slade or Zachery, and they could come sit outside her motel room, but I don’t move to get my phone. It might be something out of nothing.

A heavy banging wakes me but it takes a long minute to open my eyes and keep them open.

Myles face is the first thing I see, with his manic smile and crazy eyes.

Sitting straight, my back feels like shit and my legs are stiff and a pain shoots down my neck.

He motions for me to roll down my window and I do.

“What the fuck are you sleeping here for?”

Last night comes back to me and I glance around. Lily’s room looks no different than it did at sunrise when I finally crashed and there are no motorcycles.

“Drank too much,” I lie.

“With Loose Lily, we hear.”

The twins laugh as I frown. “You’re crazy if you don’t think Slade has his ears to the ground when it comes to his sister,” Mason tells me.

“Doesn’t explain how you heard?”

It’s still early. I can’t see them having been to the club and then back in town already.

It’s Myles who answers, “Overheard Slade asking Sparky why the fuck you’d be drinkin’ with her and wondering if you had put any part of your anatomy inside her as he knows how loose she can be.”

Fuck my life. I will now have Slade looking for me, and though he’s double my age, I’m still wary of his wrath.

“So, is she worth the hassle you’re gonna get?” Mason asks.

“Yeah, I’ve seen the appeal of Lil myself, but she must be something to have all the guys climbing on top of her,” Myles quips.

“I wouldn’t know, I slept in my truck all night.”

Both of their brows knit together and then they burst out into laughter. “You’ve fucked her,” Myles says.

“What the fuck?”

He can’t know that. I turn the ignition on and peel out of the diner’s parking lot. It’s confirmed when I arrive back at the club. Slade storms over before I have the chance to park and throws open my door. I can’t be trapped in the truck if he decides to throw hands. He’s pissed.

“What’s going on between you and my sister?”

If I tell him nothing, I’ll be lying to a brother. If I tell him the truth, it will fracture my relationship with a brother. I knew I was fucked the day I found out who she was.

I opt for partial truth.

“Brother, I watched over her last night cause after you asked me to drop her off at the motel, something spooked her and she had me take her to the bar. She was drinking hard, and she was actin’ suspiciously when I walked her back to the motel. I parked up and watched from my truck.”

This knocks the fury out of him, and his brows knit together in confusion.

I add, “The only thing I could see were motorcycles, they were there when she ordered me to take her to the bar, and they were gone when she was content to return to her room.”

“Are you sure?”

I nod. Without another word, he struts off and I make my way up to my room for a shower and more sleep. Only, as soon as I step into the bar, Leo’s in front of me.

“Have you spoken to Grim lately?”

It’s not the question that sets me on edge, it’s the tone in which he asks.

“Yeah, a few days ago.”

“How was he?”

I keep the conversation to myself, but tell him, “He was fine. Getting on with Nora and the new baby.”

He nods but he’s lost in thought. He, like Slade, walks off without another word.

What the fuck is going on with Leo and Grim?
