My brow lifted. “Zakkai?”

“Yes. He’s the Midnight Fae Source Architect. He might be able to help.”

I knew what and who Zakkai was; I was just surprised Lucifer wanted to invite him down for a visit. “I can talk to him, too.”

Lucifer gave another dip of his chin. “Meanwhile, I have some texts to review.”

“What would you like me to do?” Az asked him.

“Can you accompany Ajax?” Lucifer phrased it as a request, not a command. “I’d prefer to be able to maintain communication, should something happen. And I don’t have that sort of link to Ajax… yet.”

My eyes almost narrowed as I repeated that final word in my thoughts.Yet.

“I can do that,” Az said, his arm stretching out behind me on the booth. “But I’ll want regular updates, too.”

“Of course,” Lucifer replied. “I’ll be starting with Vita, then working from there.”

Az reached for his untouched drink and downed the contents. “Then let’s get started.”

Take us to Zenaida first,he added in my head.We can pick up some cookies for Cami. I suspect she’s going to be famished by the time Melek finishes with her…

CHAPTER 24

MELEK

Cami stared at the blade she’d selected, her brow furrowed. Doubts played through her mind, concerned that doing this might dismantle our bond.

A few weeks ago, she might have been okay with that.

However, something had changed between us, something profound.

I wasn’t sure when it had happened, but she finally understood our potential as mates.

The attraction had always existed between us. I assumed it was because our souls recognized one another. Cami hadn’t reached that level of certainty, though. She was still trying to wrap her head around the risk of failure.

“If our bond doesn’t take, then we were never meant to be together,” I told her. “As disappointing as that would be, there’s nothing we can do to change it.”

I caught her chin and guided her gaze away from the knife and up to my eyes.

“I didn’t tell you this to worry you. I was trying to explain why the ritual seems easy. It’s because our souls will be doing most of the work, which should result in another energy exchange.” Ismiled. “You enjoyed that before, which means you’re going to love it this time.”

“If it works,” she whispered.

“Ah, little angel, I’m both pained and pleased by your worry.” I leaned down to kiss her softly. “Pained because I don’t enjoy your predicament, but pleased because you’re concerned about losing me.”

I palmed her cheek, noting the fear lurking in her pretty sea-gray eyes.

“I wouldn’t do this if I thought it would be the end, Camillia. I only want forever with you. So I need you to take a leap of faith, love. Please. For our souls.”

Sitting up, I took my blade and drew it across my palm—the same one that had just been on her face.

Then I waited for her to join me.

Cami pursed her lips but otherwise didn’t move.

“Where’s my confident, gorgeous angel?” I asked, my voice low. “The one who faced a Manticore with nothing but a book. The one who saw through the trial mirages. The one who stood up to me at every turn. The one who lets Az and Ajax share her, knowing full well they could destroy her in an instant.”

She glared at me. “They wouldn’t destroy me.”
