Hanjun walked calmly to the receptionist. “Hello. Where might I find Doctor Wang’s office?”
The receptionist looked at him, confused. “Do you have an appointment?”
“No, but my fiancée did. Li Ying. My name is Wu Hanjun, I would like to talk with the doctor who performed her premarital checkup to confirm schedules, as my fiancée will have to return to America later this week, and we would like to get married before that. There is still some time left for her appointment, so it shouldn’t be a problem. ”
“Doctor Wang is in room number three.” She pointed, and Hanjun nodded in thanks and went.
Hanjun didn’t knock. He entered the office just as Wang Yang was about to head out with the samples, and they stood almost toe-to-toe. She looked up at the taller man with a frozen expression.
“Please sit down, Wang Yan,” Hanjun spoke calmly and walked in after closing the door, driving the woman ahead of him.
Wang Yan backed up to her desk and sat, putting down the samples. Hanjun pulled out the other chair and sat opposite her, crossing his hands on the table before him, leaning in towards his distant cousin.
“What are you doing here?” Hanjun asked, still deadly calm.
Wang Yan answered immediately, “Wang Guosheng sent me. I couldn’t say no.”
“Please recognize that you are in a very bad position right now, and consider your following actions very carefully. There is still a way out of this for you with your career intact,” Hanjun said.
“I believe I know what Wang Guosheng wants by having his litter meddle in our marriage process. Why do you think you are here?”
“It’s inopportune for him that you should marry and have a child, Mister Wu. I am certain he wants to make that threat empty, by making you two unable to marry.”
“Stop beating around the bush. What did he tell you to do here?”
“To make it so that Li Ying would be ineligible to be married to you.”
“By what means?”
“I could think of many ways to do that: by mixing Li Ying’s blood samples with those of an HIV-positive patient, or of a patient with another serious disease or genetic defect.”
“Most such diseases can be treated and marriage allowed after a therapeutic level of treatment has been achieved. You must have had something more specific in mind, or did you truly have no plan at this point?”
Wang Yan remained calm under Hanjun’s pressure, “I didn’t have such a plan, no.”
“I don’t believe you,” Hanjun said more firmly and lowered his head, staring at Wang Yan from under his brow. “Talk.”
“I didn’t have a plan, because I wasn’t going to do anything like that.”
“Then what were you going to do? I’m starting to believe you are not fully cooperating with me, Wang Yan.” Hanjun’s voice had lowered an octave, and now Wang Yan tensed .
Wang Yan swallowed. “The truth is…” She reached for her pocket.
Hanjun didn’t move. Wang Yan took out her phone and showed him a picture: it was of herself and another woman, embracing, and Wang Yan was kissing the woman’s cheek while she was taking the picture.
“I’m a lesbian. I have a girlfriend whom I love.”
Hanjun was not distracted, but he let her speak.
“Wang Guosheng suspects Li Ying is a man,” the doctress revealed.
“He wanted me to confirm this and then reveal her, making your marriage impossible under any circumstances and ruining your reputation. I wasn’t going to do that.
I was going to say Li Ying is a woman, no matter what the truth was.
I’m not fond of Wang Guosheng, he treats even his own family like things, and I couldn’t let him use me to ruin the chance for happiness of someone… like me. I couldn’t live with myself.”
Hanjun looked at the picture, then back up at Wang Yan’s face. She seemed to speak the truth.
Hanjun nodded. “And do you believe Li Ying is a man?”
Wang Yan seemed to consider her answer very carefully, “I have seen women who are much more masculine in appearance than her. It has indeed been rumored that Wu Hanjun is a homosexual, but I think Wang Guosheng might have been jumping to conclusions. Either way, I don’t care.
It does not matter to me personally, and I believe such knowledge could get me killed. ”
Hanjun stared Wang Yan down. “Li Ying is a woman. A healthy woman physically eligible for marriage. Do we agree?”
“I fully agree, Mister Wu: there is no doubt that Li Ying is a woman in perfect health, and I will write her a certificate allowing marriage.”
Hanjun nodded. “Very good. If you have any need of assistance in your professional or personal matters, I would take an interest in those needs, within reason, since we are in agreement on so many things. Before I go, you will take those samples and pour them down the toilet. Flush, then scrub the bowl with hydrogen peroxide, with which you will also clean the tubes and the cup thoroughly. I will watch.”
And Hanjun watched until Wang Yan had done everything as instructed to a satisfying result. There was no way to acquire Li Ying’s DNA from the blood that had been drawn now, or anything from the urine. Only then did Hanjun get up.
“Thank you for your cooperation.” He took his leave and returned to the car.
When Wu Hanjun was gone from her office, Wang Yan sat down and put her head into her hands, sighing in relief.
Whatever Hanjun believed she knew, she had said the right things to get herself out of trouble with the fearsome Wu.
But the truth was that she knew: Li Ying was, at least by their primary physical sexual characteristics, a male: the toilet in the doctor’s office was fitted with a hidden camera, for directly observing people giving samples for drug tests, and Wang Yan had booted the camera from her computer and watched while Li Ying was in there.
But as far as Wang Yan was concerned, Li Ying was a woman, and in perfect health to marry, and she would write the health certificate accordingly.
Wu Hanjun, Li Ying, I pray for your happiness. She looked at the picture of her and her girlfriend. I pray for the happiness of us all.
Hanjun returned to the car, and Li Ying was so relieved to see him.
“Well?” Li Ying asked.
Hanjun took the gun out, removed the silencer, and placed the weapon back into the glove compartment. “I’ll explain on the way. Are you okay?”
“Not exactly, but I will be.”
Hanjun understandably frowned at him with concern. “You seemed weird when you came out.”
“I had a panic attack. I’ve had them before. ”
Hanjun stared, helplessly, not knowing how to respond. “Is there something I can do?”
Li Ying managed a smile. “Tell me, we can still marry, right?”
“Yes, of course, that’s not—! Or did you mean about Wang Yan?”
“Yes, about her, whether you blew her brains up the wall and replaced the blood in the tubes with hers to send to Wang Guosheng, so that she won’t bust us? But I appreciate that you’re not scared of my craziness, haha!”
“You are not crazy,” Hanjun said firmly and put his hand on Li Ying’s cheek, caressing.
Li Ying realized that had probably been an insensitive thing to say, considering Hanjun’s parents had struggled with mental health.
“I’m sorry.” Li Ying put his hand on Hanjun’s and pressed his cheek into his palm, accepting the comfort offered.
“Don’t worry, Hanjun, I’m fine. It doesn’t happen often anymore, I guess right now I just felt…
trapped. I couldn’t escape the situation by the time I realized what could happen, and so I…
Yeah. But I know how to cope with it. I sort of shut down and go on autopilot until I’m in a safe place, and then I can calm myself down. ”
Hanjun nodded. “Do you need anything? Do you want me to go buy you cigarettes?”
“Hanjun, no! No, I’m doing so well! I mean, damn if I didn’t want one right now, but I can manage without, so no, thank you.”
“Okay.” Hanjun seemed sorry for asking, and still troubled.
“Baby…”
Li Ying realized Hanjun probably needed it for himself to be able to do something to help.
Li Ying smiled and put a hand on his thigh. “Could you just take me home? And you could give me a back rub. And some tea. Yeah, I definitely want some tea.”
It was a familiar ritual that would relax and comfort them both.
“And tell me if you need help hiding Wang Yan’s body. ”
“Nonsense.” Hanjun started the car. “I made her destroy the samples. Wang Guosheng suspects you’re a man, and had sent her to confirm and gather evidence so that he could oust you.”
“…Well, shit. Turns out it’s as we feared, and that’s what Wang Guosheng was insinuating to me during the New Year. But he’s not certain then? I mean, how could he be? At least he has no proof, if he had to send Wang Yan to collect it.”
“Mm.”
“Though isn’t it still going to look suspicious that you had Wang Yan destroy anything that could be used to gather evidence?”
“Yes. But whether she suspects anything is irrelevant: she will write you the certificate, and she will tell anyone that may ask that you are a woman, regardless of what she thinks.”
“I’m sure you took care of that. Still, Wang Guosheng’s game is getting dangerous.”
Hanjun nodded grimly.
“We let this one be, okay, Hanjun? As we have nothing to hide, yes?”
Hanjun nodded again.
“But certainly we may wonder aloud, with other key people present, about the happy coincidence that a relative of Wang Guosheng’s had been at the clinic!
And I must say that it’s quite unusual for a busy resident surgeon to be doing that kind of work.
We put some pressure back in Wang Guosheng’s corner, make everyone else wonder what’s his deal, pestering his cousin and his poor wife.
They should ask themselves: does he have some ulterior motives? ”
A nod.
Li Ying smiled. “Then any weird accusations from Wang Guosheng will simply look like poor attempts at smearing your reputation out of jealousy. And without proof, that’s all it’s going to be.”
Hanjun nodded yet again. Obedient Shanghai husband .
