Page 83 of Capturing Love
Footsteps stormed down the hallway and my body seized. Grayson flew past my office with the newspaper folded under his arm, and into his. He slammed the door closed and picked up his phone, pacing the room until someone answered.
My computer chimed.
A. MITCHELL: Can you hear that?
J. SPENCER: Yep.
A. MITCHELL: I’d hate to be on the other end of that phone call.
When the muffled yelling through the walls finally subsided, I peeked up from my desk into Grayson’s office. My heart skipped a beat when I discovered him standing at his window studying me, before signalling me to come to him with his finger.
I sighed and hesitantly rose from my chair. He held open his door as I ambled over, and closed it behind me.
“I need to explain that photo,” Grayson said as he edged around his desk and sat down, motioning for me to do the same.
Sliding into the visitor’s chair, I crossed my arms, refusing to meet his eyes. “Go.”
Grayson exhaled heavily. “My parents invited the Warrens for Thanksgiving. If I had any idea, I wouldn’t have gone at all. Mel got a little carried away when she arrived and pulled me in for a kiss. I promise you, it didn’t last long, nor did I enjoy it.”
“You could have told me she was there, I wouldn’t have been mad.”
“I’m sorry, Josie, I’m not used to sane women in my life.”
“I’m barely sane.”
He ran his fingers through his hair. “Compared to Mel, you’re the definition of the word.”
“So…” I twiddled my thumbs in my lap. “How did the photo end up in the paper?”
His shoulders dropped. “My mother leaked it to the press.”
“Why would she do that?”
“My parents want us back together. This was her gentle nudge.”
I tapered my gaze. “And Melanie?”
Grayson pursed his lips. “She’s still getting used to the idea that it’s over.”
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I tried to take it all in. “So, who were you talking to just now?”
“Mom. I told her to stop meddling and…” He paused, and caught my gaze.
My heart quickened. “And what?”
“I told her I’ve met someone.”
“Wh…What?” Oh Shit.
“It just came out,” he blurted. “I didn’t know how else to get through to her.”
“So much for uncomplicated,” I muttered, as my thoughts and heart began to race.
He sank back into his leather chair. “With you, it is uncomplicated.”
I cleared my throat and rubbed the perspiration from my neck. “And how did she take it?”
Grayson went quiet for a moment, before his mouth grew into a tight smile.
