Page 29 of Capturing Love
I scoffed. “Are you fucking with me?” I don’t have time for this.
“I fuck you not. He just came out of a top-secret meeting with Marlene, and when he saw you, he slowed his pace.”
Amy’s office was opposite mine, with the same glass facade and no privacy. I found the constant movement in the hallway distracting, so I filled my window with enough indoor ‘screening’ plants to supply enough oxygen to the whole floor.
I rolled my eyes. “I think you’re reading too much into it, Ames.”
“His energy was…” She shuddered. “Electric.”
I laughed and shook my head. “Well, if Mr. Perfect ever decides to come back, chances are I won’t be here. I haven’t picked out any photos and my article is due this afternoon.”
Amy seemed to ignore the urgency in my voice. “You never did tell me what happened at that wedding or in Vegas.”
“Best just to forget,” I said, lowering my eyes to the contact sheet on my desk.
She picked it up and squinted at the tiny images.
“I was going to ask which one you would choose…”
“Who’s this?” Amy interrupted, narrowing in on the one image I was trying to avoid. I didn’t even realise I had included it.
I groaned. “That is William Harlow. Total douchebag.”
She leant back into the chair and stared out my door, deep in thought. “Hmm…”
“What is it?”
Looking back at me and then at the photo, Amy repeated the action a few times before speaking. “Oh, nothing,” she said, slowly rising from the chair. “I’ll let you get back to work.” Placing the sheet of images back on my desk, she pointed to the photograph of Hank and Sabrina holding hands in Central Park. “This one.” And then to the newlyweds on the dancefloor. “And this one.”
“Thanks, Ames.” I smiled, and circled them with my pen. It was handy having a friend who could quite literary read my mind.
“But this one is my favourite.” She pointed to the last photo I took that night.
I peered down at the image of Grayson staring straight into my camera lens. His eyes picked up the light in such a beautiful way, he looked awestruck. Warmth flooded my body and I quickly looked away, but there was no hiding from Amy.
“Total douchebag, hey?” She chortled.
I sighed. “Let’s not talk about it.”
Amy shrugged, but her know-it-all smirk remained. “Okay…”
I waved her out of my office. “Go read someone else’s aura for once, will you?”
She laughed and paused momentarily at the door. “But yours is so fascinating. It just keeps changing colour…green…hazel…green…hazel…”
My eyes widened in shock. Now she’s messing with me. I picked up my stress ball and threw it at her, missing by far. She giggled loudly and raced back into her office before I had a chance to throw something else.
Turning back to my computer, I dragged the contact sheet across my desk for a closer look. I tried to concentrate on the circled images, but Grayson’s eyes kept pulling me in. As much as he was a douchebag, I really didn’t mind seeing his handsome face on my desk.
A message popped up on my screen.
A. MITCHELL: He has pretty eyes.
I swivelled around in my chair to find Amy sniggering in her office, spying on me through my personal forest.
J. SPENCER: I have work to do!
A. MITCHELL: Okay, okay!
