Chapter sixty

Killian

“Don’t worry, man, I’ll take care of her.

I promise,” Eddy says, stepping closer. He puts his hand on Eliana’s shoulder, and I get a whiff of peppermint in my nose.

My chest burns with envy. If I wasn’t sitting in this cell right now, I would have punched this guy in the face for touching my woman.

I’m a possessive man, and I’ll be the first to admit it.

Eliana knows that. But this is more than jealousy.

I don’t know if I’m generally pissed off or my law enforcement intuition is kicking in, but something is not right about this guy. He’s off. He rolls a mint around in his mouth, and his eyes darken. It’s so fast I could barely pick up on it, but whatever it is, I don’t like it.

Eliana is so tired she’s falling asleep on her feet. I gesture for her to come closer to the bars, pulling her out of his reach, and kiss her slowly.

“I love you, darlin’,” I say and reach for her hand, bringing her knuckles to my mouth.

She smiles sadly. “I’ll be back tomorrow,” she whispers.

“Get a deputy to take you home,” I tell her.

She nods.

“It’s alright. I’ll get her home safe,” Eddy says.

My gut twists, and I let her go.

“It’s fine,” Eliana mumbles and kisses me one more time before they walk out the door, and it slams behind them like a slap in the face. My stomach twists and turns. Bile crawls up my throat, and I take a deep breath.

This Eddy showed up because he’s visiting? No one visits Black Lake unless they absolutely have to. That’s why I think people like coming here sometimes. It’s a good place to disappear. The modern world barely exists here. It would be hard to find someone who doesn’t want to be found in Black Lake.

So why in the world is Eddy here?

The only obvious answer is that he doesn’t want to be found.

Or it’s for … my girl.

My gut tugs, and I know without a doubt I have to get out of here. I have a terrible feeling.

“Wyatt!”
