Story: Upon an April Night
“Wow.”
“I know, and I understand if this is it as far as we’re concerned. I had a great time with you, but I get it. Don’t feel bad at all.”
“Now wait a minute, I never said I didn’t want to see you again, did I?”
Her mouth fell open. “Wait, what?”
“I like you, Jamie. I’ve never had such a great first date before.”
She smiled. “Neither have I.”
“I don’t know about you, but I’d like to spend some time together and see if there’s more between us. And we can deal with the rest. I’m not going to judge you for a bad life choice. We’ve all made them.”
“Thank you for saying that, but you might change your mind when I tell you the rest.”
“Maybe, but I doubt it.”
She blurted it out before she lost her nerve. “Duncan is the baby’s father.”
Max was quiet for long seconds that stretched into a minute.
“So, that’s why he was here and acting so weird when I came to pick you up.”
“I don’t know why he was here. He just showed up and said he needed to talk.”
“He did not like me taking you out.”
“That wasn’t it. He’s engaged.”
“He didn’t like it. I could see that plain as day.”
“Probably because I’m having his baby.”
“I don’t know. It seemed like more than that, but I could be wrong.”
Jamie lay her hand on her belly. “I get it. Like I said, don’t feel bad about this. I probably should’ve told you before we went out. I felt really guilty about that.”
“I’m going to talk to him,” Max replied.
“Duncan? Why?”
“To make sure he’s okay with us seeing each other.”
“You still want to see me?”
“Yes.”
“Well, it’s not Duncan’s choice, it’s mine.”
“I like you a lot, Jamie, but Duncan’s family, and I can’t pursue you if it’s going to cause a rift between us.”
Jamie nodded. “You’re a good guy, Max McGregor.”
He shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe too good.”
She stood on her tiptoes and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.
He gave her a quick hug before heading down the sidewalk with a cute wave.
