Story: Upon an April Night
“Okay.”
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yes, stop fussing over me. I’m fine.”
He frowned as Max got into the car.
“See ya, cuz,” Max said.
“Get some rest, okay?” Duncan told Jamie.
He straightened and closed the door, his face no longer in her line of sight.
Jamie told herself not to look at Duncan as Max pulled out of the parking space, but she gave in at the last minute, and not surprisingly, he was staring at her through the windshield.
She gave him a little wave, and he held his hand up.
“I wish someone had called me sooner. I would’ve come back last night,” Max told her.
“It’s all right. I was in good hands.” Now all she could think about were Duncan’s hands on her.
“But you’re really okay?”
“I have to go to my doctor if I feel the slightest bit off, but yeah, I’m fine. Severe dehydration, and I have to take another test because I failed the glucose test I took.”
“I hope it’s nothing serious. I don’t want anything happening to you. I kinda like you.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Is that so?”
“You know it is.”
She smiled as she fought off the guilt about kissing Duncan last night.
By the time she arrived home, all she wanted was to sleep.
“Do you want me to stay?” Max said as Jamie lay down on her bed.
“I’m sorry I’m not better company. You drove all this way just to drive me home.”
He leaned forward and placed a kiss on her forehead. “It was worth it.”
She reached up and brushed a hair away from his brow. “You are the sweetest man, you know that?”
He gave her a sheepish grin. “I mean, I try.”
She smiled up at him, then lowered her hand as she rolled onto her left side and snuggled into her pillow.
“I’m going to stay at Aunt Paulie’s tonight. Can I see you tomorrow before I head back home?”
“You better.”
“Okay. Get some rest.”
She heard the faintest click as her door closed and then remembered nothing before the sound of her phone ringing who knows how many hours later. Her vision was blurry from sleep when she slapped her hand against it on her nightstand, answering before she had a chance to raise it to her ear.
“Hello? Hello?” Shannon’s voice on the other end said.
“I’m here,” she replied.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
