Story: Upon an April Night
“They’ll be supportive. And they’ll love their grandchild.”
“Wow.” She was suddenly struck by a thought.
“What?”
“I’ve always loved your family and wished I was a part of it.” She lowered her head, a little unsure if she should say this out loud. “I guess now a part of me will be.”
When Duncan didn’t say anything, Jamie stepped over to the coffee table and took a drink from a glass of water she’d left there earlier.
“You know, this is probably the most we’ve ever talked at one time,” Duncan said.
“Probably.” She set her glass down. “Too bad this little peach is the reason.” Her index fingers pointed to her belly.
“Peach, huh?” he chuckled.
“I read online that the baby is the size of a peach right now.”
“You’re comparing our baby to fruit?”
“The internet is.”
They both chuckled. At least they had a sense of humor about the situation.
“Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?” he asked.
“Not yet. I have a doctor’s appointment set for next week. I don’t think they do the ultrasound for another month or so. I’ve been trying to read a lot online, so I know what to expect.”
“I want to know what to expect too. Can I go with you to the doctor?”
“Maybe you should talk to Dréa first.”
“I’ll still want to go, even after I talk to her.”
“Of course you can go. It’s your baby too.” Her heart warmed when she thought about sharing this experience with Duncan. She wanted him to be involved, but she had tried not to get her hopes up. And she couldn’t be happier to hear him say these things.
Jamie yawned as lack of sleep caught up with her.
“I should let you rest. And I need to get some sleep too. I have a feeling tomorrow’s going to be a very long day.” He walked toward the door.
“Duncan.” It felt like there was so much more to say.
He turned back to her expectantly.
“Thank you. For everything. You … you’re just so great.”
He closed the space between them and pulled her into a hug.
She wasted no time wrapping her arms around him, soaking in every moment she was in his arms.
“You’re pretty great too,” he said.
“You’re just saying that because I’m your baby mama.”
His body shook with laughter. “You’re funny.”
She felt his arms loosen, and wished he’d kept holding on, that they could stay like that forever. He leaned in and pressed a kiss to her forehead before releasing her.
“Get some rest,” he told her.
