Story: Upon an April Night
“I’m so happy for you, Jamie.”
“So, I guess we’re sisters in Christ now. My mom referred to Gloria that way, like being a sister because they both belong to the family of God.”
“Yes, we are.” Shannon rolled her chair closer and hugged Jamie.
“At least I’ll be part of your family in that way,” Jamie said with a shrug.
“Hey, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Jamie rolled her eyes. “He’s going to marry her. It’s obvious. She’s perfect and has never made a mistake like this in her entire life. How could I even compare?”
“But you’re the one carrying his baby, Jamie. And I know he cares about you. I know it.”
“Thanks for saying that, but I’m not so sure.”
“You need to tell him about this decision you’ve made.”
Jamie smirked. “I’m sure he won’t care. He never mentioned God or church or faith to me before, so why would it matter now?” That fact suddenly struck her. Why hadn’t he ever told her about Jesus?
Shannon shook her head. “Everyone will be thrilled to hear your news. This is a big deal, Jamie. We need to celebrate it. It’s your spiritual birthday.”
“I never thought of it like that.”
Shannon jumped up. “I want to throw you a party.”
“That’s not necessary.”
“Why? We could make it a baby shower too.”
Jamie laughed. “Shouldn’t that be a little closer to the baby’s actual arrival? What if something happens before then.”
“Like what?”
Jamie shrugged. “I don’t know. What if I lose the baby?”
Shannon’s jaw dropped. “Don’t even say that.”
“I’m just saying, we should wait on baby showers until later in the year.”
Shannon’s shoulders sank. “Okay. But can I at least call up a couple of friends and throw a little celebration dinner?”
Jamie gave her a look.
“Just dinner.”
“Who with?”
“Maggie and Sarah.”
Jamie grinned. “I’d love that, actually.” She hadn’t seen them since she and Shannon had photographed Maggie and Simon’s wedding in early spring.
“Okay. I’ll make a plan. Leave it all to me.”
Chapter 22
Please don’t leave town without talking to me.” Duncan ended his voicemail to Dréa and threw himself back on the bed. They hadn’t spoken since yesterday when she left the house with her parents, and their flight home was scheduled for tomorrow evening. He wondered if maybe they’d gone back to Denver early and she hadn’t informed him.
Duncan wanted her to have the time she needed to think things over, but he was worried she would leave and they wouldn’t get to have this very important conversation.
