Story: Upon an April Night
They walked along in silence until Duncan reached his first destination—the baby boutique Jamie had stopped in front of the day she lost the coffee bet all those weeks ago.
“Let’s go in.” He motioned toward the door.
“What? We can’t go in there. It’s way too expensive. The only thing I can afford in there is a washcloth.”
He chuckled. “Nothing’s too expensive for our baby.”
“This stuff is.” Jamie motioned to her left then right as they entered the elegant store with high-end baby furniture and products throughout.
“Good morning,” the saleswoman said.
“Good morning,” Duncan replied.
“Hi.” Jamie chewed her bottom lip.
“What can I help you with?” the woman asked.
“We would like to purchase this.” Duncan pointed at the bassinet by the window.
Jamie’s mouth fell open. “Duncan,” she whispered.
“That one’s beautiful. It’s my favorite,” the woman replied.
“I’m sorry,” Jamie said. “He and I haven’t had a chance to discuss this.”
The woman looked back and forth between them.
“We’ll take it.” Duncan didn’t hesitate.
The woman nodded and headed toward the rear of the shop.
“How did you know I liked that one?” Jamie asked.
“How do you think?”
Jamie rolled her eyes, and they both said “Shannon” at the same time and laughed.
He touched her arm. “I also saw you looking at it the first time we went to Starbucks together.”
“Oh, right.”
“I’ve been planning to buy it for you and the baby for a while now.”
“You have?” A beautiful smile spread across her face.
Duncan stepped closer and took her face in his hands. “I would do anything to get you to smile at me like this.”
She tilted her head to the side as a blush colored her cheeks.
“Your bassinet is ready to be loaded into your car,” the saleswoman said.
“Great. Can I come back and pick it up later?” he asked.
“Of course.” She smiled at them. “Is this your first child?”
“Yes,” they both replied.
“What are you having?” she asked.
“Let’s go in.” He motioned toward the door.
