Story: Upon an April Night
A laugh of her own burst out, effectively cutting through the tension, and he laughed with her, which felt natural and comfortable.
When they quieted, they were left staring at each other, his hands still holding her arms. His deep brown eyes had always mesmerized her. In a certain light, they were almost hazel, with the tiniest flecks of green and gold. She wanted to get lost in them, but she knew she couldn’t.
His head moved side to side. “The way you look at me …”
“How do I look at you?” She had never tried to hide her affection for him in all the time they’d known each other, and if that was what he was seeing, she wasn’t ashamed of it.
“Like you … care.”
“I do.”
He let go of one of her arms and brushed a loose hair back from her face. “I care about you too.” His gaze fell between them. “And I care about our baby.”
“Really?” She couldn’t help getting choked up. This pregnancy was making her an emotional mess.
He nodded. “Let’s just take things as they come. One thing at a time, okay?”
“Okay.”
“So, your parents already know, but mine don’t. After I tell Dréa, I’d like to tell them. Together.”
“You want me there?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh.” She hadn’t expected that.
“Why? You don’t want to be there?”
“I don’t want them to hate me for seducing their son.”
He snorted.
“What? That’s what happened.”
“We were both there, Jamie. We both flirted that night.”
“We’ve always flirted, but that was the first time I ever dared you to take it further.”
“And I didn’t have to kiss you, did I?”
She looked down at the floor. “No.”
“But I did, because I wanted to. And I’m a grown man. I know how to stop myself, but I didn’t want to. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have gone farther than a kiss if I hadn’t pushed for more.”
“No way. I practically dragged you into my bedroom.”
“I went willingly, and you know it.”
Jamie raised an eyebrow at him. “Are we seriously arguing about whose fault this was?”
He let out that adorable laugh of his once more. “We were equally responsible.”
“Irresponsible, you mean,” she said with a smirk.
“Yeah.” He smirked too. “My family won’t hate you for this, Jamie. They all love you. You know that.”
“I’m afraid of how they’ll react.”
