Story: Desiring an Angel
The doctor laid our crying son on Sky’s chest, and she cradled the tiny body like he was made of the most precious gold.
“Hi, baby,” she crooned, lifting him higher to press her lips against his forehead. “Aren’t you just the cutest thing? I love you so much already—you have no idea. Your daddies do too, you know.”
Rhett and I moved forward as a single unit, both of us reaching with shaky hands to touch our boy who quieted, blinking as though trying to see his mommy who continued to whisper to him with soft chatting about how she would endure giving birth all over again to see his precious face.
“He’s so damn perfect,” I choked out and rubbed my leaking nose against my hospital gown. “Look at all that hair.” I laughed and met Sky’s watery gaze.
“I love you so damn much, angel.” I kissed her soundly, the warmth of Rhett’s firm hand on my lower back keeping me grounded when my heart wanted to soar. “And I love you, little man,” I told our son, kissing his button nose.
He started shrieking again, and more tears rolled down my face as I laughed.
Rhett leaned around me, and I shifted to make room for him alongside the bed. “Well done, love,” he murmured against Sky’s hair. “You’re the strongest woman I know, and I can’t tell you enough how much I adore you.”
“I love you,” Sky whispered, her eyes still watery and full of radiant joy as she peered up at Rhett.
An hour later, Rhett and I sat beside each other on a couch in Sky’s private room as she breastfed our son.
I leaned my head onto Rhett’s shoulder, still grinning like a fool, beyond content. I’d thought I’d known what happiness was before, but having my twin’s namesake being given a clean bill of health and watching him nurse like a champ…
That dream come true completed me in ways I’d never imagined. There was no single word for the well of emotion inside me.
Fate had intended for us to meet. The three of us—no, four—were meant to be.
“Love you both so damn much it hurts,” I whispered, rubbing a hand over my aching chest.
Rhett kissed my temple while squeezing me tight, and the tired smile Sky gave us across the room spanned the distance between us, filling my soul to overflowing.
