She winced. “No, and if we’re being honest…Diamond what am I going to do with a baby? Business is picking up. I just didn't see this as part of my life right now. Carmen has always been the motherly one in the group.”

I rolled my eyes. “This from the girl who's taking care of her little sister so her parents can get a break. Trey please, you could do the mother thing in your sleep.”

“What would you do if you…”

“If I what?”

“Thought you were pregnant?”

My eyes narrowed. “Sweetheart, wish that on Naomi because this lil pussy ain't having no one's kid.”

“Have you told your husband that….we all know you are not using protection.”

“Aht! Aht!” I held up my hand and took another swig, feeling the alcohol warm up my body. “We are discussing you, Miss Thang! And the first thing I would do if I thought I was pregnant is I would get a pregnancy test.”

Trey seemed to sober and think about it.

“I suppose you’re right,” she said.

“Okay, let's go get one. There’s a pharmacy across the street from here.”

“Really?”

“Really, really,” I hopped off the stool and offered her my hand.

I was here in Miami to have a little fun, but Trey was killing the vibe. Sucking it up and putting on my supportive friend-face, we stalked across the street on a mission.

The one drink had started to work on me and the heels I was wearing started to wobble under my feet. I was sure that at any moment my face might meet concrete.

The pharmacy loomed into view seconds later and the feeling of safety didn’t reach me until we walked through the doors of the pharmacy.

“Girl what if it’s positive?”

Trey gave me a death stare.

“Oh my God…”

“What?”

“Why are you this person?”

Giving a shrug, I drunkenly followed behind her and finally found the pregnancy test aisle. There were so many tests. There were tests in blue boxes. Tests in pink boxes. We had no idea what to get so we grabbed one of each.

“Hey, you wanna make this really fun?”

Trey rolled her eyes at me. “Why don’t I pee on some too.”

We both busted out laughing. Trey took a bunch and dumped them into the arm basket that she’d grabbed at the entrance and then we headed to pay.

The line moved quickly and she paid without much fuss. I stood behind her casually looking around, only to find myself locking eyes with a man who had a scar running down his face. When he realized I was looking he went the other way.

He gave me the willies.

Trey and I exited the store but not before I looked in the mirror overhead. He was for sure watching us. The hair on my arms stood up. Wrapping my arm around Trey, I hustled us out of the store.

“Girl, keep walking somebody was watching us,” I whispered.

She went to turn around and look but we were already free and clear of the store. The sparkling lights of the hotel seemed to be a shiny beacon guiding back to safety. The breath I was holding didn’t find its way out until I crossed over the threshold.
