“And Justin, I’m sure it’s nothing, so don’t worry yourself.”
I rubbed at my eyes. “Yeah. I’ll stop worrying once Vivian’s results come back.”
I headed down the hall and into the waiting area. All their faces swiveled up at me as if I’d been the subject of conversation. “I’ve convinced her to get an MRI. I know the neurosurgeon here, and he’s calling it in now.” I rubbed the back of my neck, feeling a bit awkward. “She asked me to let you know that you don’t have to stay, and she’s fine.”
Lucas, the one who had hit her in the first place, looked half in shock. “We don’t mind staying.” His fiancé rubbed his shoulder, and he intertwined his fingers with hers.
“It was part of her condition to get her to do the MRI. She appreciates that you’re all here, but I think she’s embarrassed by the whole thing.”
Lucas nodded and pushed himself off the chair. He reached for his wallet and then handed me a business card. “Please keep me updated. All of her medical bills will be taken care of.”
I tucked the card in my pocket. “I will.”
“Thank you.”
A man with dark hair and blue eyes walked up to me as Lucas walked away. He held out his hand to me. “I’m Logan, I’m friends with Vivian’s brother, Benny.”
I shook it. “Justin.”
“Listen, I know this is going to sound strange because you don’t know me, but I’ve known Vivian since we were kids. If you love her, don’t give up on her, no matter what she tells you.”
I didn’t know how to respond to that, but I didn’t need to. Logan only smiled before walking away. Crystal hugged the girl he was with, and I could see a resemblance. Sisters, probably.
Before they had a chance to leave, another man with blonde hair and the same curls as Vivian walked in. He and Logan slapped each other on the shoulder, and Logan said something to him before he looked over in my direction.
He headed my way, extending his hand. “I’m Benny, Vivian’s brother.”
I introduced myself in return.
“I hear she was being her usual stubborn self and refusing an MRI, but you somehow convinced her to do it.”
Isabella touched my arm. “They’re taking her to the MRI now. She’s asking for you.”
Benny cocked his head. “We’ll talk later.”
I had a feeling I was going to get drilled in that talk. I’d probably do the same if I had a sister.
I excused myself and half jogged to Vivian’s room. They already had her on a stretcher. She crossed her arms over her chest, slightly shivering. I grabbed the blanket off the bed and put it over her.
“Thank you.”
When we got to the front desk, they had us fill out consent forms and then led me to a changing room with a locker. I took off my belt, watch, and emptied my pockets. One of the technicians led us into the MRI room, and Vivian shut her eyes as they moved her to the table. She reached out, and I grabbed her hand. They slid down a large plastic mask over her head, and she squeezed my hand tighter.
“You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss,” she sang through a shaky breath. “A sigh is just a sigh. The fundamental things apply, as time goes by.”
I smiled, my heart filling up with warmth. It was the song fromCasablanca.
“And when two lovers woo,” I sang back. “They still say, I love you. On that you can rely.”
“No matter what the future brings,” she spoke softly. “As time goes by… Where did you learn to sing like that?”
“While you were taking five years of tap, I was in chorus.”
The technician smiled over at me and then turned to Vivian. “If you stay completely still, the sooner you’ll be out of here, okay?”
“Yes.”
“Have you had an MRI before?”
