Somewhere Out There
Justin
No matter how much I tried to focus on work, Vivian invaded my thoughts throughout the day. Her love for classic films was unexpected and threw me off. I hadn’t expected that one. Most women—and men—of my age weren’t into them. I also didn’t expect to feel what I had when she was unbuttoning my vest and helping with my tie. Maybe it was the brandy or the fact that I hadn’t been that close or intimate with any woman for nearly three years.
Has it really been that long already?
I ran a hand across my forehead, contemplating whether or not to text her. The attraction was definitely there, but it would be pointless to pursue anything beyond our current correspondence.
Paris. The woman was moving to what was obviously her dream city.
And then there was the fact she didn’t believe in love.
I’ll just fulfill my end of the bargain, go on our pretend date, and that will be it.
My phone vibrated with a text, and I instantly looked down. Vivian.
V: Your delicious wrap came in handy last night. I was able to eat with one hand while researching apartments with another. A very efficient meal for a workaholic. ;)
My thumbs slid across the screen.
J: I’m glad my culinary skills were of use.
V: Have you decided on a place to meet on Friday?
J: If you’re into wine and a nice view, I was thinking Meritage.
V: Is that where you really want to go, or did you choose Meritage because you think I’d like it?
J: The latter.
V: Where would you normally eat if you weren’t trying to impress a girl?
J: Honestly?
V: Yes. Your rule, remember?
J: Sometimes I like to walk around the North End and pick out a place I haven’t tried before.
V: Then that’s what we’ll do. You can never go wrong with Italian on a first date. ;)
My stomach felt a little queasy at the thought of this being a real date. I pulled at my collar, heat flushing over me.
J: You mean a fake first date?
V: Strictly platonic. A closing of a business deal.
I breathed a little easier.
J: Since there is no set destination, perhaps it would be easier if I picked you up? I’m hiring a car for the night anyway.
There was a long pause.
V: That’s fine. Isabella knows my address. What time?
J: How does 7:30 sound?
V: Could we make it eight?
