Story: The Rules of Fortune

January 18, 1962,

Dear Dean Weismann,

I am writing to endorse an extraordinary Galston student for acceptance into Harvard. William Carter Jr. has been with us for the last four years on a faculty scholarship. Hailing from the inner city of Boston, he has overcome the odds to demonstrate prolific intellectual capacity, tenacity, and leadership. He is set to be the salutatorian of the class of 1963 and is a pleasure to have on campus.

William Carter Jr. is beloved among the faculty for his conscientious approach to learning, his curious nature, and his meticulous character. We are so proud of the young man that he has become, and we think that he is an example of the rewards of integration, of what achievements are possible.

His exemplary disciplinary record along with his strong academics tell me that he has a bright future ahead. He would be an asset to the incoming Harvard class. I would be happy to discuss him on the phone if you would like to know more.

Best,

Dr. James Perry

Dean of Students
