Holy fuck, please say no…
“Yes,” Blair confirms, nodding slowly. “He—the burnt man—he could see me. He said I was spying on him.”
I close my eyes and pray I’m wrong, but I may have figured out why a rogue pack might have attacked her parents.
I can’t be right, though—Blair is human.
Right?
Chapter Thirty-One
BLAIR
Calix is staring at me, and I feel like I’m on display, but instead of enjoying the attention, I wonder if my stomach is inside out or something. He’s never looked at me like this.
“What?” I demand, my heart racing. “Calix, tell me what you’re thinking.”
“I don’t know,” Calix says gruffly, then slams his head against the headrest. “Fuck!”
“Calix…” I reach out for him, his skin burning beneath my fingers. “Tell me what you’re thinking, even if it’s just thoughts.”
I’m terrified he’s figured something out, something that puts me in even more danger—but I’d rather know.
Calix clenches his jaw. “I don’t know—that much is true. But…if he can see you, this fucker, then…”
Oh God.
“Maybe you’re…connected to him somehow.”
My mouth dries, and my heart turns to a heavy lump in my chest, causing me to wheeze. “Sorry… connected to himhow?”
The very idea of being connected to this beast is incomprehensible.
I can’t be.
“I don’t know,” Calix grunts in frustration. “I don’t fuckingknow. Seers are normally wolves.”
I still and hold my breath.
“But you’re not. You’re human, which is an oddity before we even begin.” Calix shakes his head and stares out the window at the open road. “But you could hear me…in your mind.Beforewe were mated.”
I swallow. “But that doesn’t mean anything, surely?”
Calix tilts his head. “I don’t know, baby. I wish I had all the answers, but I don’t.”
Desperation rips through my chest. “How couldIbe connected tohim?”
Calix can’t even look at me, and I begin to lose it.
“Just fucking tell me! I want to know what you think—even if it’s wrong!”
“You could be related to him! I don’t know, fuck!” Calix roars, his eyes wild as he glares at me.
I shrink back, and he groans.
“I’m sorry, I just… I know as much as you.” He reaches out to hold my hand, and a whimper leaves my throat.
I can’t bear to think of being related to that monster, and I don’t see how I can be. He’s older than me and Leon, and my parents have been together since school. Aunt Ray never had a child… and my dad was an only child.
