“Wait!” I call out, but she's gone.
I stare at the view, wondering if I'm dreaming. I've never seen a lake this beautiful. It's so tranquil and still?—
“Blair.” The rasp of Calix's voice sends shivers through me, and I have to admit I'm disappointed to see he's wearing clothes. Although they're pretty sexy, as far as clothes go. Grey jogging bottoms and a tight black top that clings to his upper torso, displaying his delicious body like a second skin.Holy fuck.
“How are you feeling?” Calix leans against the door, one leg bent and his arms crossed over his chest. His hair is wet, and honestly, I've never felt so turned on. I've got visions of him fucking me against that door?—
“Blair, don’t.” Calix pushes from the door and stalks toward me, his glare burning me from the inside out. “I'm struggling enough as it is; don't think about me fucking you.”
As soon as he's close to me, my skin warms, and my pussy purrs like the slut she is. But I'm frozen, the reality of his words sinking in. Then I remember he can hear my thoughts, and a low moan leaves my lips.
“You're a werewolf,” I whisper, drawing my knees to my chest and resting my head on them, trying to block out the memories that are flooding back. “Why am I here?”
Calix moves back with a grunt, and instantly I feel cold again.
How the hell does he control my temperature?
“You're here because you need my protection,” Calix tells me for the millionth time.
“So you keep saying,” I whisper, lifting my head warily. “What are you protecting me from?”
Calix just stares at me, his dark glare penetrating my soul. I would never want to be on his bad side, but something about the way he's staring at me makes me flush.
“I don't know.”
“Why do you have to help me? You don't even know me,” I say, shaking my head. “You promised you'd explain things.”
Calix considers me, his jaw tense. “You're not going to like it.”
I swallow and shrug. “Tell me.”
“You're my mate.” Calix exhales like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders, and he looks at me with a mixture of apprehension and desire.
What the hell is a mate? What is he talking about?
“Like a soulmate?” I tilt my head, and he inhales sharply.
“Yes, very much like that.”
I nod slowly. We have an attraction to one another, but he doesn't know anything about me. It seems fantastical to me, and I tell him as much.
“You don't know me, and I'm very flattered, but you can't come to that conclusion just because you find me attractive.”
Calix snorts and shakes his head.
“It's not a choice, Blair. You're meant to be my mate. That's why I have to protect you.”
“Calix, of course you have a choice, as do I.”
“No, Blair.” Calix strides over to me, and my stomach flutters at the sudden proximity. He leans over me, his biceps bulging as he cages me in once more. I swallow and try to sit up, but he refuses to budge, meaning our faces are inches apart. He inhales my scent and groans, his hand moving to my throat as he squeezes gently. “You are mine, Blair, and you have no fucking choice in the matter. Do you understand?”
Oh fuck.
Chapter Thirteen
CALIX
Blair thinks she has a choice in whether she's my mate or not. She doesn't. She can't reject me either; she's a human.
