Chapter Forty-Two
MACKENZIE
It had been a long week, but tonight was date night. After our Thanksgiving trip, Fallon seemed happier. I still hadn’t asked her if she’d heard my conversation with her brother. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting a five-year-old to give me fatherly advice.
I loved her family. They were so warm and welcoming, just like their daughter, and they made me feel right at home.
The workweek had been hectic. Getting back on track after being off for two weeks took a lot out of me, and I was ready to spend some relaxing time with Fallon.
She was bringing over dinner from our favorite Thai place, The Lucky Lotus , after she got off work, which left me in charge of picking out the movie.
Fallon definitely had the easier job between the two of us. She was the pickiest person when it came to movies.
I was setting everything up when I heard a knock on the door. I opened it, expecting to see Fallon with our food, but when I swung it open, my smile instantly fell.
“Rebecca.” I was left breathless.
Out of all the people who could’ve shown up at my door, she was not even remotely on that list.
“Hi, Kenz,” she said with a shy smile. That smile had once promised so many things, right before that same smile broke them all.
I didn’t know why she was here, but I knew I didn’t want her to be. There wasn’t anything she could want that I was willing to give her.
“What are you doing here?” I showed no emotions, indicating there wasn’t an ounce of happiness at seeing her.
“Can I come in, please? I just want to talk.” What on earth could she want to talk about?
I hadn’t seen or talked to her in over two years, and now, all of a sudden, she shows up wanting to have a chat?
All of her texts and calls had gone unanswered for a reason. There was nothing left to say between us.
“We have nothing to talk about. You lost your chance to talk when you fucked someone else on my couch.”
She furrowed her brows. “That was so long ago. You know she didn’t mean anything.”
“Right, because you’re selfish and only care about satisfying your own needs.” I rolled my eyes.
“That’s not true, I care about you. You meant everything to me. Let’s just talk inside, please?”
I meant everything to her? She had a really funny way of showing it. I went to say as much, but stopped. There was no use in arguing with someone like Rebecca. It wasn’t worth even half a breath.
I reluctantly opened the door for her to come in. I had a feeling I wouldn’t want the neighbors to witness any of what was going to be said.
“I missed you, Kenz. You look really good.”
“How did you find me, Rebecca?” I said in warning, ignoring her fake compliment.
“What? I don’t even get a hello? I haven’t seen you in so long. I thought we could catch up.” She walked toward me, and it took everything I had not to laugh at the hurt expression on her face.
She had the audacity to come into my life unannounced after all the pain she caused? What did she think? That she could just fuck someone else and come back like nothing happened? If she honestly thought this situation would play out in her favor, she was more delusional than I thought.
“Rebecca,” I bit out, stopping her with a hand up.
She sighed. “Well, I went by your work, and your boss?—”
“You went to my work?!” I said through clenched teeth. “What is wrong with you?!”
“You weren’t answering any of my messages, Kenz. I wanted to see you”
“Why would I, Rebecca? I mean, seriously, why would you think it was okay to show up at my work? Do you have any idea how unprofessional that makes me look? I don’t know why I’m even having this conversation with you. What did you say to Claire?” I pinched the bridge of my nose, where a small migraine was starting to form.
“I told her I had something personal of yours I wanted to give back to you. She said she would bring it, but I insisted. I told her it was from your mom, and I wanted to make sure it got to you safely.”
I needed to pinch myself. I was convinced this was all a horrible nightmare, and this two-faced, narcissistic, cheating-ass bitch wasn’t actually saying all of this to me right now.
I let out an irritated laugh. “So, let me see if I got this right. You pretended to love me for four fucking years, then cheated on me in the place we shared, ruining everything. And then, years later, out of the blue, you start texting and calling like nothing happened? Now you’re telling me you lied and used my dead mother as an excuse to see me? Are you fucking serious?”
I took a deep breath. Shouting never got me anywhere with her. “What do you want, Rebecca?”
“I miss you. I miss us. I wanted to talk to you in person and try to work things out. We were always so good together. We can have that again.”
I scoffed. “We were good together. Is that why you cheated on me? What ever happened to your couch buddy? Does she even know you’re here?”
She waved me off, walking toward the living room. “She… well, that didn’t work out.”
“Let me guess—she caught you cheating on her, too? What a surprise.”
She laughed. “The past is the past, Mackenzie. What matters now is that I’m here, with you, and I still love you.”
“You need to leave, Rebecca. There is nothing left between us. There hasn’t been for a long time. Like you just said, the past is the past.” I started heading for the door to open it, but she stopped me.
“Oh, come on, Kenzie.” She took a step closer. “Don’t say that. Don’t you remember how good it felt when we were together. I know I made you feel so good, baby. You can feel like that again. Let me help you remember.” She started playing with a lock of my hair but I shook my head, removing her hand.
“I am not your ‘baby,’ and I don’t need to remember anything. You need to go,” I said firmly. I gasped when she grabbed my waist and pulled me to her.
“Remember how good we were?” She pushed a hair behind my ear. “We can have that again. There is no one else for me, Kenz.” She was rubbing her hands up and down my sides.
Before I could back away and tell her to leave, she pinned me to the wall. Then, she cupped the side of my face and crashed our mouths together.
In the past, I would’ve felt a warmth surge through me—what I thought was love—and I couldn’t get enough of that feeling. But all I felt now was disgust and hatred for Rebecca. It wasn’t like when I was with Fallon, who I?—
Fallon… I had to stop this.
“Okay, babe, I’m sorry, but they didn’t have—” I broke away from Rebecca when I heard Fallon’s voice. She was standing at the door, and the food dropped from her hands.
“Fallon…” My heart raced a thousand miles a minute, and I couldn’t catch my breath.
“Rebecca?” Fallon’s voice wavered, a mix of confusion and disbelief. “What… what the fuck?”
She looked at Fallon, her eyes going wide in surprise. “Fallon, hi.” Wait, they know each other?
“Can someone tell me what the fuck is going on?” Fallon asked, looking at me with hurt in her eyes. I couldn’t bear to look at her any longer.
“Fallon, this is?—”
“Her fiancée,” Rebecca cut in helpfully.
“Fiancée? What… you… wait, what?” Fallon asked, her voice breathless.
“Rebecca is my ex- fiancée,” I corrected, still avoiding her. I couldn’t look her in the eyes.
She huffed out a laugh. “Really? Well, that’s not what it looked like when you had your tongue down her throat.”
“No, Fallon, I didn’t?—”
“Fallon, it’s good to see you. You look well,” Rebecca said, standing with her arms crossed and a faint smirk on her lips. The way she eyed my girlfriend made something protective flare inside me, and I had to fight the urge to step in front of her.
“I look well? That’s what you want to fucking say to me right now? I guess some things never change. Unbelievable.”
“Okay, I’m sorry, but how do you two know each other?” I looked back and forth between them, trying to piece together what was happening.
Rebecca shrugged, as if we had all been having a simple conversation—like nothing was wrong. “Funny story, actually. Fallon was... what did you call her, Kenz? My ‘couch buddy’?” She smirked.
Fallon and I stared at each other before I turned back to Rebecca. “Wait, she was the one you had sex with on my couch?”
If their roles had been reversed—if Rebecca hadn’t been on top, I would’ve seen that red hair, and this whole time, I?—
“Couch buddy?” Fallon’s enraged voice sliced through my thoughts of what-ifs. “We were together for two years, and all I was to you was a fucking ‘couch buddy’?” She laughed, shaking her head. “Unreal.”
She looked at me, tears filling her eyes. “Engaged?” she whispered, her brows furrowing. Hurt was etched into her features, and it made me want to cry.
I opened my mouth to speak, to say anything, to try to explain, but Rebecca cut in. “Well, this is a little awkward. Listen, I was just stopping by to talk to your friend, Fallon.”
“Fallon is my girlfriend, Rebecca.” I explained. I was growing more angry by the second, and I just wanted to be alone with Fallon.
Rebecca narrowed her eyebrows. “Girlfriend? You didn’t mention you were seeing someone?” She brought her thumb to her lips and brushed the lipstick smear away, making the situation worse.
“I was her girlfriend,” Fallon said, not looking at me.
I could tell she was trying so hard not to let the tears fall. I felt like the worst person in the world, and I didn’t know how to make it better.
I stepped toward her, but she put up a hand and shook her head. “What? Fallon, please just let me explain,” I pleaded. I needed to get Rebecca out of here and fix this mess she’d put me in.
“No.” Her voice sounded soft and broken. “There is nothing left to say, Mackenzie.”
She turned to walk away, but I grabbed her wrist. She yanked it back and slightly turned to me, but her eyes didn’t move up to meet mine. “Don’t. You don’t get to do that anymore,” she whispered.
She looked at Rebecca and shook her head before finally looking at me. “Just me, right?” She scoffed. “I am such an idiot.”
“Fallon, please,” I begged, but she turned and walked out the door, not looking back, not saying a word.
I turned to Rebecca and took a deep breath. “You better be gone by the time I come back,” I demanded in an eerily calm voice.
She narrowed her brows. “Mackenzie, you can’t be serious. You’re choosing her? Look how easily she gave up on you. She’ll never love you the way I do. She’s just a pair of tits, and that’s all she’ll ever be. Now, let me take you to your room and remind you what you’ve been missing out on.” She grinned seductively.
My rage consumed me as the love of my life walked away. I stepped into Rebecca’s space, my voice turning into something unrecognizable. “Do not ever talk about Fallon like that. I will never want you again, do you get that? You’re insane and delusional, and you need to understand that we are done. If you ever come looking for me, or Fallon again, I will make sure everyone knows what a disgusting, worthless piece of shit you are. And trust me, I’ll stop at nothing to make your life a living hell.”
Rebecca’s face turned pale as she lowered her gaze, and I didn’t wait to see if she left. I slammed the door behind me and ran after Fallon.
